The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1879 by Mormon settlers, who named it for their friend and cattle dealer, James Tracy. Tracy had come to the area from Utah looking for more land to farm after losing his holdings in Utah when Brigham Young ordered all Mormons to leave their homes in 1847. In 1879, he started a small grocery store with his brother-in-law John Sutter and soon became known for his quality goods and friendly service. Over time, Tracy's stores grew into one of the largest in the Central Valley. He also developed a large agricultural empire which included over 100 businesses ranging from hayseed to cotton farming. In addition to his business activities, Tracy also served as mayor (1937-1938) and selectman (1939-1945). He was 91 years old when he died on December 12th, 2016 at the age of 95 years old.
