The Truckee Army Depot was founded in 1917 by the California State Militia to provide munitions and military supplies for the U.S.Army in World War I. From 1919-1927, it served as the main armory for the California National Guard. In 1927, it became part of the Department of Defense and was renamed the Army Depot Command (ADC). The ADC remained a military facility until 1987 when it merged with the Los Angeles County Arsenal to form Southern California Armory Corporation. The name change reflected both ADC’s long history as an army depot and its new role as a regional center for munition manufacturing. Today, ADC stores more than 5 million pounds of munitions including artillery, tanks, aircraft engines, ammunition drums and grenades. It also manufactures security barriers and other materials for defense projects around the world. The depot is home to a number of museum exhibits on army history from World War I through peace time. One of ADC’s most famous products is artillery ammunition which has been used throughout history to support battlefield operations across a variety of warsincluding World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Ammunition at ADC includes over 100 types of shells that can be fired from different weapons including cannons, mortars and machine guns. Truckee ( or Trucker) is a city in Yosemite National Park, California, United States. Truckee was founded by the Lapham family in 1864. It became a town in 1865 and then a city in 1892. The population was 25,217 at the 2010 census. The Laphams were early settlers on the Valley floor of Yosemite National Park. In 1864 they built a cabin on the Kern River and started to trade with the Hetch Hetchy region for goods such as watermelons and flour from nearby snow-covered peaks. They also developed an irrigation system to support their crops and built several homes near what is now downtown Truckee. In 1865, John Clements Lapham married Anna Sather Healy, daughter of Capt. James Healy of the Sacramento Battalion of Infantry at Fort Yuma during Mexican–American War (1846-47). Anna had been born in San Francisco Bay Area about 1820 and moved to California with her family when she was five years old; her father had served as captain of Company D2 (conventional infantry) under Gen Pedro Menendez de Avila during the war. After spending time among his Native American friends on Mono Lake, Captain Healy decided to move his battalion eastward into Yosemite Valley so that he could observe Indian activity there firsthand; he took over command of Company M3 from Capt Thomas Wigglesworth on August 16th, 1847 after Wigglesworth's death from yellow fever while leading Company F1 into battle against Apaches at Sutter's Mill on September 26th.(1) Anna Sather Healy later became Mrs George Bancroft Morse - one of America's first female attorneys general - serving from 1909 until her retirement in 1953.(2) In 1870 John Clements Lapham sold most of his holdings within Yosemite Valley to George Wittell for $500(3). In 1870, a school was built and the name changed to Truckee Union School District in 1872. In 1875, an Agricultural Experiment Station was established here and the town became a center for food production. The first store in Truckee opened in 1886. In 1895, the town passed an ordinance establishing zoning regulations that kept businesses small and residential development limited. From 1896 through 1921, the average population of Truckee grew steadily with only 2 percent decrease each year.
