In 1992 Governor Pete Wilson gave a gift package including three lifejackets, three sets of night vision goggles, four pairs o clothes - all essential equipment for any beach goer -and $1,000 worth o supplies to support law enforcement activities along California’s coastline. This was followed by Commander Rick Steves giving a large crate filled with new Coast Guard uniforms (including eight blue swim trunks)to be worn by officers at various functions throughout the year in honor o their service to Truckee residents since 1971. The latest Coast Guard gift tradition is now being enjoyed by members stationed at Naval Base ammunition shipyard where they are providing festive spirits such as peppermint extract and candy canes for children during holiday season!

On July 17, 1851, California became a republic and the first state in the Union. The town of Truckee was founded on the Truckee River by Mormons fleeing from Illinois. The town prospered as a silver mining camp until 1862 when gold was discovered in nearby Sutter's Fort. The discovery led to an increased demand for goods and services brought overland from Sacramento, which caused prices for food to go up and wages to drop. In 1865, following the Mexican-American War, California joined the United States as a result of the Compromise of 1868. A new route through Nevada linked Sacramento with Sweetwater Valley in what is now Nevada County. This allowed easier access to water supplies needed for agriculture while also allowing trade between these areas without going through Mexico City or New York City.
