Navy gift history in Truckee, California began with the opening of the naval base at Mare Island in1893. The navy purchased a number of towed artillery pieces and placed them on the wharf next to the fortification. In 1898, they constructed a new yard on Richards Road east of town that housed both the tugboats used for tows and also two large launches, one fueled by gasoline and one by oil. From this yard, the navy could launch vessels such as USS Maine (1898) and USS Constitution (1901). In 1912, the navy built a new powerhouse on Post Street that became known as "The Windmill." This power plant provided electricity for all of downtown Truckee and parts of adjacent communities. It was also from here that ships launched from Mare Island to various ports throughout Northern California. In 1915, when World War I began, the navy decided it needed more warships than it could purchase from Europe. They requisitioned five destroyers from Norway and delivered them to America in 1916. Thenceforth until World War II there was no naval base open to receive gifts from abroad but Naval Station San Francisco received many donations including munitions shipments during World War II. On July 15th 1957 an amphibious assault ship (LST-418) called "USS Valley Forge" made its way through channels near Point Reyes National Seashore en route to Camp Pendleton Marines Reserve Base when she ran into trouble just off shore about 5 miles north of where she had been anticipated; her engines were knocked out by adverse weather conditions which caused her navigation system error; subsequent inquiry revealed that someone aboard LST 418 had sent a postcard inviting others aboard LST 419 who were then located 10 miles south at Point Reyes National Seashore after their engines failed which resulted in their being stranded ashore without food or water; these men later organized themselves into detachments known collectively as D-Day Detachments who would support Operation Overlord landings Normandy beaches -Operation Neptune's Spear".
