Since the beginning of the 20th century, Tulare County has been home to an Air Force Base. The base was established in World War II as RAF Travis and has since undergone multiple name changes. It is now known as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBAR), tularenco's largest military installation and one of the most important strategic locations in California. JBAR is home to a diverse range of Air Force units, including fighters, bombers, helicopters, and drones. The base also houses a number of research facilities that are vital for the Air Force's operations across California. Bush after its original donation from Boeing had been given back to them following extensive use within California during both World Wars I and II alone! Tulare is a small town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 17,545 at the 2010 census. Tulare is part of the Fresno–Madera metropolitan area. It is a agricultural and ranching center with a large cotton crop and citrus production. The town has two hospitals, one mental health hospital, four schools, three churches and one post office. The first Europeans to visit Tulare were Spanish missionaries in 1821. A fort was built on the site of present-day Tulare in 1824 by Juan Bautista Alvarado as part of his effort to protect Mission San Francisco de la Encinas from Comanche raiding parties that had been attacking missions throughout California since the early 1800s. In 1861, General Winfield Scott invaded California and reached Tulare after defeating Mexican forces at Bear River Bridge; this event became known as the Battle of Bear River (1861). In 1865, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in what is now Oroville; this led to increased mining activity in the area and transformed Tulare into an important center for gold mining operations. The townspeople responded by building a school and store complex called "The Gilded Age" () around it in 1867 which remain standing today. In 1906 oil began flowing from Anadarko Oil Field under strikes by several ranchers who leased land adjacent to personal ranches run by Cripple Creek millionaire John Dutton; this led to increased development around Tulare, including construction of high-rise buildings such as Pico Hall (). During World War II tularenians served in both military service (eighty percent were drafted) and labor roles (such as working on Navy bases); many are still alive today thanks to their participation in wartime initiatives such as food rationing (), public Works Administration programs (), early air defense systems (), postwar reconstruction efforts ()) In 1950 President Harry Truman announced plans for the relocation of American troops stationed overseas during the Korean War; these troops would be replaced by National Guardsmen (); however, local officials rejected Truman's proposal because they did not want American businesses affecting their economy (); instead they formed a committee called "Task Force West" () which recommended moving all government services into new facilities inside town while maintaining essential functions outside (); this plan eventually succeeded (). After years of debate over how best to handle its growing population (), Tulare incorporated as an unincorporated village on December 15th, 1958 (). Today there are over 16 thousand residents living within its borders ().
