Tulare is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 23,541 at the 2010 census. Tulare is located in the eastern part of Kern County on the edge of the Mojave Desert. It has an elevation of 4,471 feet (1,362 m). Tulare's economy depends largely upon agriculture and ranching. The city was founded by John Wesley Powell in 1892 as a trading post for travelers coming down the Kern River from Lancaster and Bakersfield. The first white person to live in Tulare was James Fenton who arrived with his family in 1887. In 1896, William Haughton built a adobe home near where he later sold land to Wirt Hinton for $1,500 dollars. In 1906, Alfred Butterfield purchased land east of town from Hinton and built aadobe home which served as the first municipally run grocery store in Tulare. In 1912, JW Marriott opened his first hotel here when he bought property across the street from what is now downtown Tulare from Henry Epperson for $10 000$. In 1916-1917 Don Andres renovated and enlarged this hotel into what became known as "Marriott's Hotel" meaning it continued until that year as one of only two hotels remaining standing after World War II according to author Wayne Allyn Root . He also added tennis courts and other amenities to make it an attractive traveler stop during its heyday years before it went out of business due primarily to competition from motel chains . A new courthouse was completed in 1923 by architect Harry Elbert Beall who designed similar structures throughout Kern County including one still extant on State Route 99 north of Visalia: courthouse annexes Nos. 1-4 were constructed between 1924-1945 at a cost of over $15 million dollars; all but four are gone with only Fremont having one surviving example (demolished 2006). A few blocks south off US Highway 395 northwest corner current day Speedway Boulevard there were two more early 20th century buildings composed mostly of redwood - Will Rogers General Store & Cafe cum Masonic Temple #2 (now Midtowne Promenade) & Service Station #3 also known locally as Joe's Garage / American Legion Post No 3 (now 100 block NW corner current day IH 15 freeway), both active until around 1960s or 1970s when they went through various changes hands until being acquired by local developer Alonzo Boyles(1898-1982) who rehabilitated them into condominium units circa 1980s or 1990s although some remain extant today adjacent to Enterprise Park Apartments complex . Tulare is a small town in the heart of California's Central Valley. The population was 7,056 at the 2000 census. It is located in Kern County, between Bakersfield and Fresno. Tulare is named after George Armstrong Custer, an American general who died during the Mexican-American War. The history of Tulare began with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769. The area that includes Tulare now belonged to Rancho San Joaquin de la Vega. In 1847, James Wolk and others bought Rancho San Joaquin from ranch hands for $5 per acre. They built a mill on the current site of Tulare High School in 1849 and began to raise cotton, wheat and other crops. A post office was established at Tulare in 1850, but no resident ever moved to the town until 1865 when John Sutter arrived from Sacramento with his family and founded Sutter Laboratories. In 1875, a group of businessmen led by Hyrum Smith formed the Kern County Agricultural Society to promote agriculture in Kern County. They donated land for a new irrigation system and set up a agricultural experiment station there called Kern River station (later renamed Davis–Montezuma Station). In 1886 they sold most of their holdings to Southern Pacific Railway Company for $40 million dollars which created what is today known as Southern Pacific Railroad Company Depot Square (located on Main Street). In 1932 Charles Muhlenberg opened Muhlenberg’s grocery store which became one of the largest employers in downtown Tulare proper before it closed down in 1996; it has been replaced by Enterprise Center mall across the street since then In 1951 Harry Fenton organized a dance troupe called “The Californians” which performed at local hotels until 1957 when they disbanded because too many members wanted to move away from Fresno . A year later he started organizing dances himself under the name “The United Dance Troupe” which continued performance until 1984 when it disbanded again due to lack of funding
