The Tulare coffee industry is one of the oldest in the state, dating back to 1868. At that time, the area was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California and coffee beans were grown for export. The first commercial crop was planted in 1876, and by 1902, coffee had become a major agricultural product in the region. In response to increased demand from abroad, coffee production began expanding rapidly throughout the early 21st century. Today, Tulare hosts one of the largest coffee businesses in California, with more than 1 million pounds of beans exported annually.
The City of Tulare, California is located in the Sacramento Valley and is bordered by the cities of Firebaugh to the north, West Sacramento to the east, and Placer County to the south. The population was 144,822 at the 2010 census. The city has a total area of 17.2 square miles (45.4 km²). Tulare's first inhabitants were Native American people who spoke an Alamo Band language. The Spanish people arrived in 1821 and named it San Miguel de Tucumán after their expedition from Mexico City. In 1848, they founded what is now Tulare while still living on Native American land. In 1853 they became part of California as part of Proposition 8 which granted voting rights to all citizens over 21 years old regardless of race or ethnicity. In 1906, when California acquired most of its current territory through the League Of United Latin American Citizens Treaty process, Tulare became one of its original communities within that new territory. It was formally incorporated as a city on December 15th, 1907 with a population of 102 residents. During World War II Tulare served as both an air raid warning center and post-war relocation camp for Japanese Americans living in East Bay counties west of Berkeley until 1951 when they were relocated to Amador County because those areas were considered too dangerous for Japanese Americans living anywhere other than Los Angeles County. After World War II ended there was significant growth in industry throughout downtown Tulare with new housing developments built along Stockton Boulevard and Wabash Avenue; however much growth has since stopped due to high unemployment rates among blue-collar workers in recent decades followed by declines in agricultural production across much of the valley which have impacted employment opportunities overall in downtown Tulare although some businesses have managed to remain open through contracting out or moving into other sectors outside OFWU membership). Downtown redevelopment activity resumed following passage by voters during 1992 referendum Measure AA which provided for $20 million per year for beautification projects including such things as streetscape restoration/widening; adaptive reuse program targeted at professional office buildings; replacement or renovation/modification/updates to fire stations/police barracks etc.; creation or expansion (to include mixed use)of many municipally owned properties currently vacant or used primarily for agricultural purposes within 2 blocks radius thereof adjacent arterial streets parking lots public transportation service terminals Amtrak rail lines access Interstate 5 from east side - making it possible for tourists visiting town without having to leave their vehicle parked on I-5 just past exit 190A - this also created jobs providing truck driving services between downtown and I-5 near Amtrak Station Most recently there has been renewed interest gentrification efforts targeting wealthy young professionals seeking more upscale neighborhoods within easy walking distance either northeast cornerof main street opposite bank building Telus Company Headquarters Velocity Tower upper floors - again creating job opportunitiesavaiding tourists from experiencing typical small town values not found elsewhere near freeway exits

In 1848, the California Gold Rush started and millions of dollars worth of gold was found in what is now Tulare County. The town began to grow rapidly and by 1860, there were over 1,000 people living in Tulare County. In 1915, a hydroelectric plant was built on the nearby Kern River and made Tulare County one of the first counties in California to receive electrical power. Today, Tulare County is a major agricultural center with crops such as grapes, almonds, cotton and vegetables.
