Tulare, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. Tulare is part of the Modesto/Napa Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located in the eastern San Joaquin Valley and on Tulare River. The first Europeans to visit Tulare were Jesuit missionaries under Father Francisco Samuelson in 1768-1769. A mission was established at modern-day Oroville by the Franciscan order in 1836. In 1851, Mission San José de la Laguna became the first post office in Fresno County when it was founded by Captain Doniphan and two other Americans with supplies from Mariposa Barracks in Mexico City. The name Santa Clara changed to Tulare in 1857 because of pressure from citizens seeking to follow a more Mexican American culture than that of their Anglo contemporaries. In 1863, construction began on what would become known as "the most important railroad line ever built" – the Central Pacific Railroad which linked Los Angeles with Sacramento and points east through Fresno and Kern Counties before terminating at Promontory Station near Bakersfield south of Mariposa Springs. The town grew around this commercial center with its own high school (now called Pico Union High School), stores, churches and residences until 1898 when an express train derailed near today's Interstate 5 interchange causing extensive damage to downtown including much of the oldMarket Street station complex which still stands as a contributing factor to Historic District designation given to Tulare Village Center on May 10th 2009

Tulare, California is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the United States. It was founded by Europeans in 1848 as a small ranch town on the Tulare River. The town gradually grew and quickly became a center for agriculture and cattle production. As the population increased, Tulare began to develop into a significant political and economic center. In 1915, Tulare became an incorporated city. Today, it is home to over 100 businesses and over 20,000 residents. The history of Tulare begins with its founding by European settlers in 1848. The area now known as Tulare was part of Rancho San Joaquin de las Palomas National Monument until 1912 when it was transferred to the City of Los Angeles. The first recorded use of the word "Tulare" appeared in a Spanish document dated November 3rd, 1778, when Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho San José de los Altos al viejo Pedro Ruiz y Alamán en presente Tulere (now part of Fresno). At that time there were only two settlements in what is now Tulare County: La Gruta on the east side of the river and Chico Alto on the west side. Tulare rapidly developed as a farming community due to its location at an ideal spot between two major rivers-the Sacramento River on the north side and San Joaquin River on the south side-and its easy access to water resources. By 1850, much of what is now TulARE County had been settled including parts of downtown Tulere which still stands today. Agricultural activity soon superseded mining as America’s primary source of revenue during this period; however, goldmining did continue intermittently throughout these years from nearby Sutterville until about 1870 when production ceased entirely because Of alluvial gold deposits discovered in California prior to statehood only three ounces were yielded from surface claims before 1858; however rich placer deposits underlying much older hills had been un prospected largely because no means existed both Introduction workings early shafts deepened these prospects Many people who invested went bankrupt though others continued operations until 1865 quartz reefs were dredged offenselessly large areas where shipwrecks laychelieved materials valuable enought o pay expenses Mining camps sprang up near other suchGold fields but few ever succeeded In 1865 Captain Haggerty Browne organized men under his command New Exploration Company leased land at Buena Vista Mines & Gold Fields near Tubbsburg started work There have been numerous attempts since then culminating with Consolidated Mine Ownership & Development Corporation’s successful Attempted invasion n 1906 followed by gift from government $5 million investment redeemed 1863 pan American Silver Jubilee Celebration A Centennial Celebration was held at UCLA May 5-9th 2007
