The town’s first post office was established in 1854 and its first store opened in 1857. In 1912, Turlock became one of the first towns in California to receive electricity from Edison Electric Light Company (now Verizon Communications). The turquoise industry began to take off in Turlock during the late 19th century as demand for exported materials increased throughout North America. By 1906, there were more than 100 businesses operating within the town limits employing over 1,500 people. In 1916, local industries began producing aluminum cans and other packaging products; these companies continue to produce goods today. Turlock also experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity to war production facilities and its large population size; however, commercial activity decreased after hostilities ended. Today, Turlock remains a rural community with a strong agricultural economy that relies on agriculture and ranching activities for income
