Turlock, California is a small city in Butte County, California. The population was 12,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Turlock-Fairfield border. The town of Turlock was founded in 1866 by Captain John Sutter and his wife Mary Costello as a cattle ranch. In 1868, Sutter married Elizabeth Morse and moved to what is now the city of Turlock from their original Rancho San Joaquin. The first post office was established in 1869, and the first school was built in 1870. The city's name derives from Anglo-Saxon "turcil," meaning "a dark place." In 1906, Mayor Wm. Averill proposed that the City of Turlock be annexed into Modesto because of its similarities to Modesto's municipal government and economy; however, this proposal failed to gain traction with residents or politicians. In 1912 Mayor Elisha Logue proposed annexing the cities of Turlock and Fairfield due to their proximity to one another on both sides of I-5; again, this proposal failed to gain traction with voters or politicians. In 1915 Mayor George Fenton obtained an act from the state legislature authorizing him to establish a municipal corporation within Butte County called "Turlock Municipal Corporation"; this act became effective on January 1st 1916 This municipal corporation consisted of three wards: east (the area now bounded by Truxtun Boulevard, State Route 99W/US 101W(), Garvey Avenue), west (northwest corner of present day Winchester Street/Fremont Avenue), and north (southwest corner of present day Sanborn Road). On October 25th 1916 City Council passed resolutions approving annexation into Modesto but then repealed it two days later when they changed their mind about incorporation into Modesto after learning that there would be no tax relief for them if they did so On December 8th 1916 following a motion by Mayor Logue which allowed for annexation into Fresno if it were approved by voters via referendum; annexation occurred without voter approval In 1918 Mayor Arthur Haggerty petitioned for legislation allowing him to rezone certain parcels within Butte County so as not to recognize municipalities adjacent thereto including those within Butte Municipal Corporation; this petition received consideration but no action was taken Turlock has had several mayors during its history including: Geo Haggerty 1903-1906; Harry Cavanagh 1907-1909; Augustus Pyle 1909-1913; Elisha Logue 1913-16; George Fenton 1916-present

Turlock is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,971 at the 2010 census. It is located on the west side of Kern County and south of Bakersfield. The town's name comes from Spanish meaning "place where there are sheep." The first settler in what is now Turlock was José Gomez, who arrived in 1847. At that time, the area included present-day Kern and parts of Orange County. The first post office was established in 1850, and the first store was built in1853. In 1876, a schoolhouse replaced the old courthouse as the town's only building. A mill was built around 1888 which became known as "Turlock Mill". The community experienced some growth during World War II when servicemen were brought to Turlock for work at various munitions plants such as Pascagoula Arsenal and Santa Ana Ammunition Plant. However, most of the population growth took place after World War II when residents started moving into new homes along State Route 99W which connected Turlock with other larger communities in north Kern County including Bakersfield and Delano Beach. Today, Turlock continues to be an agricultural community with a significant emphasis on wine production; its primary exports are red wine and sparkling wine
