However, it wasn't until 1875 that coffee became commercially available to Americans. At that time, coffee beans were sourced from Africa and Peru. Turlock first began to produce coffee as early as 1885. The first roasters in town were John Crippen and Samuel Morse. In 1907, Jens Jensen started making his own beans from scratch and soon became one of the most prominent local roasters. Today, Jens Jensen Coffee is one of America's oldest continuously operating artisanal coffee businesses.

Turlock was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1851. The first post office was established in 1852. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to honor Major General George Armstrong Custer. The name change did not take effect until 1951 because of an error made by the post office officials. In 1957, Arroyo Seco Dam was completed and became one of the most important water resources for Los Angeles County. This event created a boom in industry in Turlock which has helped make it a popular tourist destination since then. The population of Turlock peaked at 507 people in 1960 but has since fallen to below 40 thousand residents due to numerous factors such as losing jobs in major technology companies and other businesses moving away from Turlock during the 1990s and 2000s recession that affected most western US towns with similar populations

Turlock, California is a small city located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The community was founded in 1907 by Italian immigrants as a trading post on the Turlock River. The name "Turlock" comes from the Chumash word "turquoise," meaning "to clear away obstacle." The town grew rapidly during World War II due to the development of the atomic bomb plant at nearby Livermore National Laboratory. In recent years, Turlock has undergone some redevelopment and has become an important center for research and development in the region. The history of Turlock can be traced back to 1907 when Italian immigrants founded the town on the banks of the Turlock River. At first, only men worked in the businesses established within the town limits; however, over time, women also began to work in agriculture and business. By 1945, businesses had grown sufficiently that it became necessary to form a government: a board of trustees was elected who provided leadership and ran day-to-day affairs. turLock's growth continued during wartime as soldiers arrived and settled in what were then remote rural areas of Northern California. With increased access to transportation and mills located throughout Greater Los Angeles County, industry began expanding rapidly into Central Valley towns such as Stockton (1948), Modesto (1949), Redding (1950), Visalia (1951) and Fresno (1952). However, due to stringent regulations from local authorities about alcohol sales and traffic congestion caused by increasing numbers of people living within walking distance of factories or shopping malls, most big-box stores closed up shop by 1961. The lack of natural resources – oilrefineries could not be built close enough to provide fuel for cars – led Toombs & Company AG to abandon plans for a new aluminum smelter at Hollister after only two years in operation because no ore could be found near Cliftonville; instead they built their new plants at Manteca (later Tracy) and Carlsbad (later Bakersfield). With production ceasing at Hollister around 1962–63, local residents turned their attention towards developing abandoned agricultural land adjacent to town Limits for housing developments which would require permits from state officials*fn1(*fn2)*. This process known as " appear before you are gone" started with plans for an upscale mall called Oasis planned for east side streets between Fourth Street/Hollister Boulevard southward along Mail Road/Oasis Drive until opposition stopped it just short of its scheduled opening date yanked all trees out from behind Ivar Wieselman's home where it would have been fronting onto Hwy 64 opposite his house now part way down Garvin Rd., effectively blocking view across his property [1]. Banksruptcy laws allowed these developers - many Italians - potential millionaires but without permits they lost title deeds documenting their holdings so today there are few clues remaining as far as understanding how this whole area came about other than there being more money available than ever before
