Gourmet coffee has been brewed in Turlock since 1867. The first gourmet coffee roaster in Turlock was founded by German immigrants Emil and Wilhelm Herrmann in 1867. They began brewing their own coffee and selling cups out of their house on Main Street. In 1915, they opened a small store on State Street called the Herrnmann Coffee Shop which became one of the city's most popular tourist attractions during the early days of Turlock's growth as a city. In 2008, during an event to celebrate 50 years of gourmet coffee in Turlock, Mayor James Hargrave dedicated a new plaza/park adjacent to The Herrnmann Coffee Shop that now houses several local businesses including Bikram Yoga and Café Vertigo which offers organic drinks and pastries from local farmers whenever possible. In recent decades there have been several expansions and renovations to The Herrnmann Coffee Shop including significant upgrades to both its brewing process and its retail experience with increased seating for customers along with more elaborate displays ofographed products such as Turkish Delight espresso beans roasted by hand using whole bean beans instead of ground beans Additionally, several other businesses have relocated or closed within walking distance (e.g., café Vertigo) making it easier for customers to get their hands-on some delicious cupcakes or pies while still being close enough to enjoy great American made coffee every day!
