Turlock, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Inland Empire region of southern Los Angeles County and north of downtown LA. The Turlock-Madera Airport is about an hour's drive west of the town. The first Europeans to visit this area were members of the Spanish missions Santa Anita and Mission San Gabriel Arcángel in 1821 and 1822 respectively. The town name was likely derived from "Turlock" ( pronounced "tūr-kuh"), one of several places mentioned by Pedro Crespo in his travelogue Trip through Southern California, published posthumously in 1795: "In some parts [of] this country there are many villages called Trousseaux; these are all near to each other on either side of a stream which flows into the ocean... One village situated on an high hill near where we now live had a name very different from that above named,—Tūrlock—for it was built upon some ruins left by Indians who had strongest relations with us." A later article said that "the original turLock probably derived its name from certain valuable minerals which abound hereabouts". According to 16th century land grants made by Juan Bautista de Anza during his Mexican expedition against Mexico City, part of Rancho Rincon de las Monjas grant included 100 acres (40 ha) grant #415 for "a piece or parcel lying between Rincon and Túrlock", granted on July 4, 1599 "...to Francisco García...y sus hijos Andres y Juana". This grant may be what led to later settler confusion as both Túrlock Village and Rincon Village were located within ranch boundaries at various points over time. A second grant dated November 9, 1769 covering an additional 350 acres (160 ha) southeastward along Tuscany Creek included another piece or parcel including present day Turlock Village being given to Antonio Lara with 400/acre (24 ha), plus 200/acre (12 ha), for Rancho El Dorado also known as Rancho del Norte; it has been reported that Lara may have been ancestral owner of modern day Downey Hills. After purchasing Rancho del Norte from Manuel Nieto in 1853 he changed its name to Downey Hills after buying land east of Torrance Boulevard between Prairie Avenue and Mulholland Drive near Paramount Studios studios - although no documentary evidence exists verifying this claim. Downey Heights Cemetery was established in 1889 adjacent to what is now Northridge High School at 8001 South Clarendon Ave., across from UCLA campus inside downey hills borders today’s Northridge neighborhood southwest suburban Los Angeles county line northwest corner Riverside County line northeast corner Ventura County line east border Orange County line . There are also reports claiming Downey Hills might have originated with earlier Native American Indian settlements such as Ohlone people inhabiting lands immediately southward including present day Yorba Linda city limits . Although further research is needed any confirmed origins would make Downey Hills one among many possible locations for early European settlement within contemporary Southern Californian region. By 1840 about 40% Mexican Americans lived here while 60% Anglo Americans did so according to US census figures . During World War II more than 10% Japanese American residents lived here until shortly before their displacement during World War II when most shifted south away from Hollywood watershed area towards Anaheim , Anaheim Hills and Fullerton areas due then again large Japanese American peacetime population growth rates newly created postwar GreaterLos Angeles metropolitan area ." It is located on the east side of Mono County and shares borders with Heber City to the south and Turlock itself to the north. The name "Turlock" is derived from Spanish words meaning "place where Indians live." When it was first platted as part of what is now Mono County in 1864 by Captain George McDonnell, there were no Indian settlements in that area. The town's site may have been chosen for its location close to high water tables which made lumbering possible and also made it an ideal spot for agriculture given its fertile soil. Lumber exports from Turlock began shortly after it became a full-fledged city in 1906. During World War I, Turlock supplied 20 percent of Doane's munitions needs and did so until 1942 when production shifted to nearby Big Bear City because of wartime restrictions on ammunition purchases by America's allies. After the war, industry declined but continues today as a small manufacturing community including fireworks production
