Military Gift History in Turlock, California began with the first U.S. military installation in Turlock, California on November 10, 1867 when General John C. Fremont and his regiment of cavalry were quartered at the Officers’ Hotel. The hotel was later renamed Fort Tejon and became the home of the 1st Infantry Regiment (1868-1910) until it was disbanded on October 5, 1912. In 1892, the Army moved Camp Sherman from its original location near Redding to what is now known as Soldier Field on Main Street in downtown Turlock. This gave rise to a long history of American military gifts being given and received in town. In 1924, Camp Sherman was again relocated when it was moved from its original site across I-5 from downtown to new quarters located on Orchard Street between Second and Third Streets. The next significant change came during World War II when Army Air Forces Base San Luis Obispo (now Edwards Air Force Base) opened up within walking distance of town and Fort Tejon became an important airfield providing support for Operation _Husky_ (July 1944-August 1945). At this time Fort Tejon also became home to various United States Marine Corps Ground Forces units including Headquarters Fifth Marines Group which later became Marine Aircraft Wing TWOIGHTEEN (MAG2), responsible for providing aerial refueling services over Japan during World War II. During peacetime periods there were no major changes to military gift history until 1978 when the City of Turlock passed a ordinance requiring any city government or organization receiving municipal or community funding be made available for donation to either local museums or nonprofit organizations engaged in education, heritage preservation or cultural awareness programs pertaining specifically to our city’s history and culture. Army barracks that had been used by both Regular Army personnel as well as National Guard troops were donated by the City Council in 1984 after years of discussion about finding a permanent home for these barracks that would serve as an open educational facility Open To All For Learning purposes only! From then until today all but one barracks has been leased out through annual events such as Art + Music Night at Depot Square around Labor Day weekend where art enthusiasts can view recent works created by local artists while listening live music by local bands throughout the evening

Turlock is a small town in the Central Valley of California, about an hour and a half east of Sacramento. It is located on the banks of the Stanislaus River, about two miles northwest of its namesake city. The first permanent residents in this area were Native Americans who lived along the riverbank for hundreds of years. The Spanish arrived in 1769 and founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on Rancho Monterrey (now part of Fremont). In 1868, Governor John C. Fremont appointed George J. Hinkle as Supervising Engineer for all southern California with jurisdiction over present-day Turlock and other areas near Sacramento. At that time, Hinkle recommended that Turlock be incorporated as a town because it was so adjacent to agricultural potential and had large markets for goods produced within its limits. In 1876, friendship between Richard King Eaton, 5th Viscount Northbourne and Nevada Senator James Gadsden led to the enactment by Congress of the General Mining Act which allowed United States mining interests in Mexico to become involved in California gold mining operations; these operations began at Comstock Lode near modern day Las Vegas,. By 1886 there were over 1,000 men employed at Comstock Lode alone; however production ceased due to various factors including strikes by labor unions and general strike action throughout America during that year (). During World War II, much activity took place at Comstock Lode which included making munitions from coal mined there (); however after 1945 production stopped entirely due to environmental problems associated with nearby hillslopes containing 233 million metric tons (Mt) of cumulative uranium ores (). Today only a few scattered remnants are left around Comstock Lode while most has been disturbed by development activities over the past several decades not least because uranium ore contains enough radiation exposure to cause skin cancer even brief exposures (see also photo gallery). The townspeople have often tried to keep their memories alive through community events like historical quilt exhibitions or PumpkinFestivals where they offer local pumpkin pies made from local ingredients ().
