Turlock, California has a rich history of being home to the nation's first National Guard unit. The unit was organized on November 15, 1862 under the command of General George Armstrong Custer and is considered to be one of the most successful National Guard units in United States history. The unit played a major role in the American Civil War and helped protect Southern California from Confederate attack. After the war, the unit served as a garrison force in California before being disbanded on September 1, 1885. However, it wasn't until 1923 that Turlock's first full-time national guard detachment was established and it continued to serve as a part of the state's defense system until 1991. In that year, Turlock became an unincorporated community within San Bernardino County and its military detachment was redesignated as the 9th Infantry Regiment (National Guard) after being donated by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Today, Turlock is home to two additional full-time national guard detachments: The 485th Infantry Regiment (National Guard) which is located in Redlands and serves portions of Riverside County; and The 522nd Infantry Regiment (National Guard) which is located in Monrovia

Turlock's National Guard is a branch of the United States military that provides support to local law enforcement and national security. The unit was founded in 1916 as part of the California militia, and has since grown into a statewide division with over 26,000 members. Turlock is a small city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,813 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. Turlock was founded by James Hutton in 1847 as a post office on the east bank of the Arroyo Seco River. The town site was chosen due to its water availability and proximity to other towns in early days of California. The first post office closed in 1840 because of lack of mail service from Sacramento due to Indian hostilities along the Santa Monica Mountains. In 1851, John Waddell established a ferryboat landing on the river for passenger and freight transport between Turlock and Los Angeles. By 1865, Turlock had developed into an agricultural center with thousands of acres (0.8 km2)of land irrigated with canals and surface water systems for irrigation purposes only; however, no manufacturing took place until after World War II when large-scale refrigeration became popular in California

The first unit was organized on November 25, 1775, when New York State's Regiment of Light Dragoons was created with the purpose of providing security for the Governor and his family during the Stamp Act Crisis. The Militia Acts were passed in 1788 to establish a national guard system. On May 26, 1800, President John Adams signed an act that provided for the organization of a regiment of one thousand men each from Massachusetts and New York. These units were called volunteer regiments and initially served mainly in internal defense measures against Indian attacks but soon became involved in campaigns against France and Spain. In 1802, president James K. Polk authorized Congress to raise two corps totaling eighty-four thousand soldiers to be used as part of his invasion of Mexico. However, construction on these units was not completed until after Polk's election as president in November 1904. The first unit raised under this authority arrived at Valparaiso on December 15, 1904; it was known as Company D (3d Infantry). This force participated in the Mexican-American War (1846-48) and then took part in Reconstruction following the war. The National Guard played an important role through most of the twentieth century; however, military service has become less common due to technological advancements and changes within society which have made life more complex than it once was. Today's National Guardsmen serve primarily as reserve components of the U.S Military Forces or participate in ceremonial functions such as 4thof July parades and Veterans Day ceremonies throughout America.
Turlock, California is located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Bernardino Valley region. The area now known as Turlock was first inhabited by Mono and Mohawk people who lived near what is now Yucca Valley. In 1853, Mexican land grants were made to Juan Bautista Alvarado and his brother Pio for their Rancho Adobe de las Palomas in present-day Los Angeles County. Two years later, a group of American soldiers under General Antonio López de Santa Anna discovered gold on November 15, 1854 while exploring the Owens River valley in present-day Kern County. The discovery led to a period of great excitement and speculation in California as prospects for gold were reported from every corner of the state. On January 7, 1861, during the American Civil War, an expedition led by Colonel George Armstrong Custer discovered gold at Sutter’s Fort on Mount Shasta in Northern California. The discovery created great excitement throughout much of America and raised questions about whether or not California would become part of the Union after Abraham Lincoln’s victory over Confederate forces at Gettysburg had ended slavery in America. After months of exploration and analysis by military engineers, it was decided that there was no significant amount of gold available to be mined at Sutter’s Fort; instead,gold had been found washing up on shorelines nearby from shipswrecked along the coast when storms swept through southern Californian ports during winter 1862-63. California became a Ulysses S Grant territory following victory over Mexico at Palo Alto Bridge on October 28,,1865 which resulted in Mexico ceding most of modern day Fresno County including present day Turlock to Ulysses S Grant as well as parts eastward into Inyo County
