The USAF has a rich history that goes back to World War I when American aviators flew into enemy territory to provide munitions and supplies for Allied forces. In World War II, American pilots flew strategic bombing raids against Nazi Germany and Japan with little fear for their lives. During both wars, America's aerial offensive capabilities were critical to victory. In 1961, President John F Kennedy announced the creation of Operation Jupiter; an initiative which aimed to expand American aviation into new areas such as missile defense and space exploration. This event marked a change in policy for the USAF and created a need for more aircraft than could beprocured from domestic sources. It also opened up opportunities for foreign purchases which would later lead to US Aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin becoming synonymous with US Aerospace industry dominance throughout much of the 21st century. Tustin, California is a small town located in Orange County, California. The population of Tustin was estimated at 1,851 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Gabriel Valley region and sits on the border of Pasadena and West Covina. The history of Tustin can be traced back to 1871 when one General John C. Fremont founded what is now known as Tustin Springs Ranch on land that he had purchased from Buenaventura Manor heirs. A post office called "Tustin" was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. At first, it served only residents of Los Angeles County; however, by 1912, all citizens of Orange County were allowed to send mail to Tustin. The first store in Tustin opened its doors in 1903. In 1927, the city of Pasadena (then part of Los Angeles) annexed parts of Orange County including Tustin and developed it into an agricultural community with irrigation systems for citrus fruit production. However, during World War II, many jobs for soldiers were needed outside Los Angeles so the city decided to keep its borders closed so that military personnel could stay local and not have their families starve while they were away fighting abroad. In 1948 voters approved a resolution declaring July 4th "National Independence Day" in honor of America's independence from Spain. After years of planning by City Hall and the Santa Monica Mountains Community Development Agency (SMMCDA), which had been created following Measure J-3 (the Santa Monica Mountains Regional Parks District Act), development began on what would become known as "The Lakeshore". This project included widening State Route 9 from two lanes to four; adding an expressway through downtown; separating residential areas along routes 1015/1017 from commercial districts; and creating Platte Park Beach between Interstate 5/State Route 99E and Laurel Canyon Boulevard east thereof).
