The first artisan coffee roasters in Tustin started out small and roast only two or three cups of their own coffee each week. However, over time, as demand for high-quality Colombian-grown coffee grew, so too did the number ofartisan roasters in Tustin. By the early 2000s, there were at least ten different artisanal roasters operating in Tustin. The growth of artisanal coffee has been due to a number of factors: better quality beans from Colombia; more creative roasting methods; and an increasing trend among people in region for unique flavors and textures in their morning java. A recent trend in coffee is the artisanal variety. This refers to coffee that has been made by hand, using only the finest beans from around the world. Many of these coffees are sourced from small, independent roasters who know their product inside and out. The artisanal coffee movement began in earnest about 10 years ago, when a group of roasters formed called The Coffee Masters. Their goal was to bring quality, handmade coffee to a wider audience. They started out selling their coffee direct to consumers, but over time they've ventured into catering to cafes and restaurants as well. Today'sartisanal coffee industry is huge, with many different types and sizes of roasts available. Tustin, California is a small town in Orange County, California, United States. It is located on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. The population was 17,908 at the 2010 census. Tustin was founded in 1887 by Russian-American entrepreneur Ivan Tustin and his wife Anna Maria Magdalena Kondrashova. The town became an incorporated city in 1912. In 1994, it lost its status as a city after voters passed a referendum to annex neighboring Newport Beach into Tustin. The first people to live near what is now Tustin were Native American residents who called it "the bay" because of its location on San Andreas fault line. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed there about 1540 on his way from Nuñez de Balboa's expedition to find new land for Spain. A mission was established here in 1778 by Franciscan missionaries José Gomez and Vicente Guerrero under the leadership of Father Junípero Serra. In 1887, Russian-American entrepreneur Ivan Tustin bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of coastal land east of where he lived with his wife Anna Maria Magdalena Kondrashova from Manuel Nieto de la Vega y Gutiérrez for $1 million (). With this purchase, Ivan began construction of what would become known as Villa del Rey (), which still stands today across from State Route 1A (coastal Highway), just south of Bolsa Avenue ()—today's civic center and business district.—Casa Blanca Boulevard (), which connected downtown with Paseo del Mar (); and Isla Nueva (), an adjacent island that served as both home or office facilities for Ivan's family members as well as their employees (). The first permanent resident in Villa del Rey was AnnaMariaMagdalenaKondrashevna herself who arrived on October 16th 1887 with her husband Ivan and five children: Dmitry Bogdanovich (1888–1937), Alexei Nikolaevich (1890–1967), Irina Petrovna (1892–1982), Lev Tolstoy (1895–1971) and Máximo Gorky (); all born between 1885 and 1888 within three years following AnnaMariaMagdalenaKondrashevna's arrival,—and their families' rented servant girl named Liza Andreyeva (). After a yearlong occupancy trial period during which all but Dmitry Bogdanovich moved out due to health concerns about living close to AnnaMariaMagdalenaKondrashevna, they finally received permission to move in permanently on November 2nd 1889.—All except Dmitry Bogdanovich moved into Villa del Rey eventually becoming full-time residents (). Eugene Debs visited Villa del Rey while campaigning around May 4th 1890 while staying at Salinas Naval Station aboard USS Olympia ()—now part of USCG Pier 19boatyard complex off SR 1A next to Afloat Marine Terminal ($))—during his unsuccessful bid for President against William McKinley . Debs later wrote about his visit: "I anchored my ship at anchor some distance from shore near Point Lobos lighthouse [sic] taking possession I went ashore among these pines...It would be difficult for me not even now to describe adequately the effect produced by this beautiful spot set upon such strong headland...the water is so clear you can see whales coming upoutof it" AnnaMariaMagdalenaKondrashevna died suddenly two weeks after they moved into their house leaving her husband with six children; one son died young before he could reach adulthood also leaving behind four sisters.—Dmitry Bogdanovich became full-time owner/manager of Villa del Rey when his father died aged 83 years old on February 20th 1951.—Isla Nueva soon became uninhabitable due to overfishing so development stopped until 1976 when regulatory changes removed most all makeable resources offshore.; In 1993 annexation by Newport Beach occurred making Tustin an unincorporated city once again.}
