Tustin, California is a small town located in Orange County, California. It is an agricultural and bedroom community with a population of around 100,000. The history of Tustin begins with the arrival of Europeans in 1769. The area that now covers Tustin was part of Rancho de las Pulgas, one of 10 ranchos granted to Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo by King Felipe II. The area came under Mexican rule in 1821 when Mexico ceded it to America as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army invaded Tustin and burned down most of the town. The first post office was established at Tustin on December 12th, 1851. The name "Tustin" originated from "tusquía", a Native American word meaning place where some kind of fruit grew abundantly. In 1902 Gail Borden married William Randolph Hearst at his home in nearby Morningside Heights; they would later move to their own estate there called Hearst Castle which became nationally known for its hosting receptions for President Franklin D. Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1935-1945).
