Tustin, California is a small city in Orange County, California, United States. It is located on the edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and has a population of around 73,000 as of 2010. Tustin was founded by Jews in 1887 as a citrus growing town on the west side of Long Beach. The name comes from two Hebrew words meaning "to turn" or "to straighten out." The first Jew to settle in Tustin was Abraham Hirschfeld, who arrived in 1887. By 1912, there were more than 100 businesses and 2,500 residents in Tustin proper. A post office was established at Tustin in 1888 and remained open until it closed receivership in 1960. In 1916-17, when Orange County became part of the newly formed state of California, Tustin's Jewish community sent money to support Republican candidates for state assembly and county offices. In 1924-25 Mayor Harry Siegel sponsored an effort to build a new synagogue which met with success; construction began that year and finished five years later. At that time, only 4% of all American Jews lived outside Israel; but by 1990 about 20% did so here in Orange County alone. The synagogue’s building remains one of downtown Tustin’s most recognizable landmarks today (it also served as an interim school during its construction). A number of important events took place during the 1940s and 1950s when local Jews struggled through hard times: Adolph Greenbaum became CEO of Safeway Stores Inc., Zalman Shazar ran for governor multiple times but failed each time; David Levy served as mayor from 1951-63; Miriam Margolin became executive director (later CEO)of CAIR Southern California before her death at age 87; Leah Goldberg settled down here with her husband Chaim Goldstein after relocating from Tel Aviv upon their moving to Los Angeles in 1978 – they are now both buried here within close proximity to one another.https://www2aplus1com/history/tUSTIN_CAHISTORY
In 1821, the Rancho Tuestin Mexican land grant was given to Juan B. Humboldt by Governor Manuel Micheltorena. In 1835, it was purchased by Captain John C. Frémont and his wife Caroline Beale Frémont for $8,000. The rancho became part of the California Gold Rush in 1848 when gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill on the San Andreas Fault. The Frémonts made their home at Tustin until their death in 1902. In 1915, during World War I, General Pershing ordered all American troops out of Southern California because he felt that General William Westmoreland's forces were occupying too much of our state without justification. Tustin became an important naval base during World War II with its own air force detachment known as "Tustin Air Force Station". Today, Tustin is a vibrant community with a rich history that has been impacted by its many inhabitants over the years.
