Tustin, California is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 54,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Tustin is known for its beaches and golf courses. The first people to live in the area that now makes up Tustin were Coast Miwok Indians who lived in the hills of present-day Newport Beach. In 1839, landowner Captain John Sutter founded what would become Sacramento County and named it after his home town of Tustin, England. The first settlers were Separate Native American families who arrived from Northern California in 1849 as part of General Mariano Lara's army during the Mexican–American War. In 1861, when America gained independence from Mexico, many Kumeyaay Indians living on the eastern coast joined with American troops to fight for their country against those loyal to Spain. Because they were not considered full citizens by Mexico until after American Independence was achieved, these warriors are sometimes called " Californios ." Many Kumeyaay also fought for Ulysses S. Grant during the Civil War because he sympathized with them and wanted to protect them from Spanish rule across much of their territory east of Baja California (now Hidalgo County). As early as 1863 local physician Drs James Irvine and George Price had been treating soldiers brought overland with Quack doctor remedies before they reached Fort Tejon on First Creek Valley Road near present-day Santa Ana Boulevard and Second Street south of Interstate 5; some believed this practice might have been Introduced by Yuma Indian traders sailing into Southern California looking for new areas to settle which they had discovered filled with rich gold deposits having never traveled far northward before encountering warm weather conditions along coastal valleys without mountains obstructing Soil moisture extraction potential.). . . By 1865 there seemed reasonable prospects that an extensive mine could be found at Anza which would prove very valuable if successful but no one took any interest in developing it because there was no money involved other than getting rich off goldmining operations." Tustin, California is a town in Orange County, California. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Irvine-Anaheim-Tustin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The townsite was claimed by both the United States and Mexico on December 17, 1842 as Rancho San Bernardino de Tustin (later known as Rancho Cucamonga), and it became part of what is now Orange County on March 14, 1850. Prior to American settlement, Mission San Francisco de Tustin (founded in 1795) was the largest mission in southern California and served as a center for Hispanic Christianity throughout much of Southern California. In 1847, Mexican nationals from Alta California also settled in what would become Tustin when they were kicked out of their lands east of Pasadena after being told by Emperor Agustín that they could not own land south of Fresno City because they were not white enough. Most of these immigrants came through smuggling operations organized by Diego Rivera and his brother Joaquin. A portion of this group eventually founded what is now called Park Boulevard Baptist Church which has been worshipped there since 1853. On October 30th 1903, post office manager Waddell Reed opened a new branch location at 4242 Broadway Street in Anaheim Hills with an initial mailing rate for those living within one mile radius only! The growth led to the move to their present location on Main Street just north of SR 78 in 1912 where mail processing continued until 1974 when it moved into its current building next door to Jardines Banco which still uses that original name today
