The Marine Corps has a long and rich history in Tustin, California. The city was named after General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the Mexican-American War and died at the Battle of Tejas. In 1887, the first Marines were stationed in Tustin when they were called to active duty during the Spanish-American War. After World War II, Tustin became an important base for the Marine Corps both in terms of their numbers and their operations overseas. Today, Tustin is home to more than 12,000 Marines and Sailors who serve across all military branches. Tustin is also home to several marine installations which are used for training purposes as well as storage for equipment and supplies. One of these is MARINESTCOAST LLC which was established in 1969 and provides training exercises for naval officers from various countries around the world. It also houses two Marine Barracks which house 1,700 Marines and sailors from various units throughout California as well as other states. These barracks provide housing, food services, laundry facilities, recreational opportunities as well as Drill sergeants on call 24/7 who can help ensure that marines staying in Tustin stay safe while on deployment or conducting operations ashore or afloat. In addition to its marines stationed here locally there are also detachments stationed outside of town located at Camp Pendleton ( adjacent to Miramar airbase) MCAS El Centro (MCAS Yuma), Camp Shafter (Shafter AFB) and Marine Barracks Ventura (Ventura County). This allows Marines located anywhere within California deploy with ease without having to travel great distances or wait long periods of time for their unit's return home. Tustin, California is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 33,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pasadena-El Monte-Hollywood metropolitan area. The name "Tustin" originated from Spanish settlers who called it "Tejusa". The current spelling is taken from an earlier name for the town, "Tustin Acres", which was also used by Mexican Americans. According to historian Leroy J. Fenton, Tustin's early history can be traced back to 1847 when Ranchojon de la Fuente was granted to José Antonio Bautista Alvarado and Vicente Guerrero. In 1851, John Caddo Paths bought Rancho La Puerta de Tustin and founded the City of Tustin on land that had been part of Rancho Tejusa. That same year, two brothers named Edward Payson and Benjamin Banneker purchased 5 square miles (12 km²) east of Tustin from Juan Francisco Lopez for $1 million. This area became known as East Pasadena; Payson and Banneker subdivided it into blocks in 1860 and laid out streets gridwise around their home site. In 1871, Jesse Hahn donated 8 acres (3 ha) north of present day Main Street to establish what would become North Campus at University Park; this land later became Northridge High School & community center complex onMain Street within Tustin limits today. In 1886 David Starr Jordan built a sugar refinery on now State Route 187 just south of Main Street northeast corner with Palm Drive near Morongo Basin Regional Preserve - Today's Diablo Canyon National Monument - making him one of Southern California's most famous entrepreneurs in its early years...Jordan leased his refinery property from Eureka Sugar Refining Company until 1907 when he sold it to Leland Stanford Jr., brotherhood president – one year before his death – for $2 million cash plus interest ($10 million today). He greatly expanded upon its operations there becoming one of Northern California's leading industrialists with interests including electric vehicles production at Redwood Shores Naval Shipyard during World War I… He also acquired Mission Bayou where he built some portion or all of Stanford University – now known as UC Berkeley - providing much needed housing opportunities for students during those difficult days following World War II…. His legacy includes various schools within Palo Alto Unified School District: Menlo College (now Facebook), UC Riverside (now UC Irvine), Santa Clara University (now Stanford), Caltech (later UCLA), etc., among others." Some people credit George Washington Carver with being the first white person in Tustins Agricultural Experiment Station located off SR 187 between SR 151N/SR 152W & SR 187NW between 1959-1960 while others attribute this honor to pioneer Joseph Strauss who had lived nearby since pre gold rush days
