Tustin, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 66,549 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Orange County after Anaheim. The first permanent settlers in what is now Tustin were Menifee Indians who arrived from southern California circa 1827. A grant of Rancho Tejon to José Castro on December 12, 1839 was the beginning of land ownership by Mexican Americans and later Anglo Americans. In 1871, two United States Senators from California– John Sherman (D-CA) and William Higginson (D-CA) – purchased Rancho Guadalupe from José Castro for $2,000 with the understanding that it would be used as a cattle range and water supply for their constituencies in Los Angeles and Sacramento respectively. This purchase created one of Southern Californias earliest towns with a civic center despite its name change to Tustin less than three years later on August 29th due to objections from other Californians about using an Indian name for their new town adjacent to them on both sides of the San Gabriel River Valley. The purposeful choice of a Spanish word which did not have any English equivalent (and still doesn't) led some residents of Santa Ana to refer informally to themselves as "Tustins" while others adopted "Guadalupe" because they felt more comfortable with that name given that they had been owner or tenantof the rancho since before it became part of Los Angeles County. In 1906, when former Mayor George Earle Goodrich turned over his ownership interest in Rancho Tejon to his son Harry Goodrich Jr., there ensued much discussion about whether or not Tustin should become an incorporated town but ultimately no action was taken until 1915 when Congressman Louie Baca recommended incorporation because he thought it would make economic sense given the growing population density in Orange County resulting from rapid industrial development across Highway 1 between Long Beach and Anaheim; Tustin never achieved this level of growth but has nonetheless retained its status as a rural enclave surrounded by major metropolitan areas ever since. In 1963 following passage through Congress by then-Senator Edmund Egan (D-CA), Measure GG became law giving Single Tax Districts throughout most of Southern California local taxing power without having to go through county commissioners; consequently making annexation efforts difficult although not impossible due to opposition from various factions within single tax districts statewide). Tustin, California is a small city in Orange County, California. The population was 16,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1912 by William Halsey Tustin and his wife Evalyn Halsey Tustin on land now encompass by several ranches and other parcels of estate property that were acquired from various ranchers. The original name for the town was "Hughsville." In 1922, the city began annexing adjacent unincorporated areas to its limits to form new neighborhoods: North Hollywood (1922), Bel Air (1924), Gardena (1925), Westwood Village (1926). In 1928, when Hollywood annexed East Hollywood, Tustin became only one of three cities within Hollywood which continued to exist as separate municipalities; the others being Culver City and Larchmont. After annexation into Hollywood proper in 1932, Tustin again became a separate municipality under its own government. It was during this time that much of what is now downtown Tustin was developed including both commercial and residential areas such as Broadway & Vine Street and nearby Canoga Park Boulevard. A major freeways through southern Orange County were routed through Los Angeles via I-405/I-10 junction just east of downtown Los Angeles before exiting onto I-5 south towards Irvine Welsh International Airport while bypassing downtown Los Angeles completely to serve as an interchange with I-5 northbound off ramps near Staples Center near Century City on May 22, 1984 creating a grand boulevard running from Downtown LA all the way down Lankershim Blvd past Sepulveda Blvd along Mulholland Dr., finally terminating at Ventura Blvd just south of Santa Monica Pier parking garage
