The name was changed to Tustin on February 3, 1907. The population of Tustin peaked at over 100,000 in 1950 but has since declined to around 60,000 today. The history of Tustin begins with its founding as Villa Park by George and Maria Tustin. On December 29th 1877 the town was renamed to TUSTIN after they purchased land from the San Gabriel Mission Company for $5 per acre (1/4 dollar per square foot). The original plan for the town called for it to be a place where people could raise crops and live off the land. However due to economic issues that occurred during the gold Rush the town quickly became a commercial center with businesses such as stores, hotels, restaurants and theaters opening up throughout the late 1800s. This prosperity led to what is now known as "The Gold Rush Years." In 1923 there were 6 churches in TUSTIN with attendance totaling 2800 people; however by 1940 only 2 churches remained within the boundaries of present-day TUSTIN while attendances had decreased from 5000+ to 507+. In 1957 there were significant changes taking place within Southern California when Governor Earl Warren announced plans for Interstate 10 which would connect Los Angeles and Phoenix through Orange County; this would bring new industry into TUSTIN and cause an increase in business opportunities for both sexes within the local community. As a result of this development many businesses closed down or moved away from downtown while others renovated their properties into new structures including The Plaza Hotel which stands today as one of oldest buildings in downtown TUSTIN still functioning effectively as a hotel! As time passed more residents began moving out of central Business District towards newer neighborhoods making way for what is currently known as "The Old Neighborhood". One major factor that contributed greatly to this change was redevelopment efforts carried out by Mayor Steve Young along with his predecessor Herb Letts who focused heavily on creating open space in central business district providing access routes leading away from traffic congestionarteries onto undeveloped rural areas giving rise to what are today known as "Green spaces" near popular entertainment venues such as Live Oak Music Hall & Casino! This growth continued until 1990 when Central Expressway construction caused serious traffic backups lasting several hours each day stretching out across much of DowntownOrange county crippling business districts along I-10 including those near Gelson's Creek park! As a result many businesses chose not To reopen despite offers from restaurateurs willing to take advantage of increased patronage spurred by media attention given vicinity freeway closures! Despite limited success some creative entrepreneurs did manage successful reopens like Jimmy John's sandwich shop reopened following extensive renovation which included installation of high definition TVs! uStreet Coffee also reopened after successful renovation adding seating inside & outside green space complete with WiFi capabilities
