Tactical coffee is a term used to describe coffee that is prepared in an effort to improve battlefield effectiveness. Coffee has been used as a drinking companion for soldiers, generals, and commanders for centuries. Some of the first references to coffee in warfare date back to ancient Greece and Rome. The use of coffee in battle has been known to help increase morale and provide energy during long campaigns. Today, Tactical Coffee offers high quality cups of coffee at a fraction of the cost of regular cup-of-coffee prices. When American troops invaded Iraq in 2003, they brought with them the love affair between espresso and combat. Iraqi soldiers were familiar with French press machines which brewed large doses of bitter caffeine for their troops early in the war. Starbucks began importing French press machines into Iraq soon after the invasion, giving Iraqis access to this popular beverage form of caffeine before it was scarce on home soil. Iraqi forces quickly proved themselves adept at using tactical coffees while fighting against coalition forces on multiple fronts throughout 2004-2005. By 2006, Starbucks had introduced its own version of Arabic pressed espresso called "Sahwa." Sahwa is named after Baghdad's old fortified citadel which served as an observation post for Ottoman Turkish army units during World War I and II. Iraqi military commanders appreciated Starbucks' latest product line because it offered a unique blend of flavors not found elsewhere on the battlefield: sweet/spicy notes from Sumatra Indonesia beans; bitterness from Illyzeras grown near Rome; and deep roasted Arabica beans from Costa Rica). While many cafes across America followed suit by introducing tactical coffee products, Starbucks remained one of few companies that actively marketed these drinks to Iraqi troops stationed abroad as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). This marketing strategy paid off as Iraqi troops enjoyed higher levels Of satisfaction with their cups than those serving U.S.-led coalition forces ashore in Afghanistan or Kuwait during this time period.* As Iraq’s military fortunes declined following its defeat at Tikrit in 2007, many Iraqis turned away from espresso due to lack thereof available on the battlefield† [*See footnote 2*]. Coffee first started being served in Tustin, California, in the early 1800s. The first coffee shop was opened by two Italian immigrants, Giovanni and Antonio Castaldi, in 1826. It was later renamed "The Coffee House" and ran by the Castaldis until they sold it to another family in 1928. The original building still stands today and is used as a storage facility for the local grocery store. In 1898, The Coffee House changed its name to American Legion Post #521. The first European to visit Tustin was Captain John Smith in 1769. The town was founded by Antonio Maria del Valle, who named it after his estates in Tuscany. The original Mission San Antonio de Tustin was built in 1821. In 1844, the California Gold Rush began and led to the town's growth. The first post office was established in 1851. By 1865, the population of Tustin had reached 10,000 people and it became an incorporated city. In 1926, a fire destroyed much of downtown but the Town economy still thrived thanks to its heavy industry including shipbuilding and flour milling until World War II when production shifted to war-related materials. During World War II, many jobs went away due to the wartime economy but since then Tustin has enjoyed a resurgence as an vibrant community with several businesses having been opened over the years such as a health care center and a golf course.
