Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid premiered at Regal Cinema on Western Avenue on July 2, 1969; this helped to spur development around the corner into what is now known as Midtown LA (formerly Midtown West). After much debate among planners about what should be done with all those empty lots surrounding Regal Cinema site (and thus creating more congested streets), city officials decided to create an open-air plaza adjacent to it called "The Square." It lies on both sides of the San Gabriel River and is bordered by Riverside to the north and east, Lake Elsinore to the south and west, and Sepulveda Boulevard to the northwest.
