In 1957, the Webers donated land to the City ofLA to create what would become Universal Studios Park; they also contributed $225,000 towards its construction cost which still stands as one of LA's largest contributions to municipal coffers.Twentynine Palms has experienced many changes over its history – most notably through gentrification which has transformed it into an affluent enclave with expensive real estate developments surrounding it on three sides. The town was founded by citrus growers and beekeepers in 1903 as a small agricultural community on almost .500 acres (2 km²) of land between Interstate 10 and the San Gabriel River. In 1906, it became an incorporated town with a population of 160 people. The name originated from its location in Twentynine Palms Valley—twenty miles (32 km) east of Los Angeles and only three miles (5 km) north of Palm Springs. The early residents were largely fruit farmers who grew oranges, apples, pears, grapes, figs and other vegetables for local markets and export to Europe and Japan. In 1915, when California became an United States territory, Twentynine Palms became part of Riverside County; but because it was within Riverside's then-new territorial limit of 8 square miles (20 km²), it never had any city or county services provided until after 1959 when the City of San Bernardino annexing portions of Riverside County served as its first municipal government. In 1963–1964 Hollywood producer Harry Cohn donated $250,000 to fund development at what would become known as Cohn•Fitzgerald Ranch which includedTwentynine Palms Boulevard which runs along its eastern border today. The movie industry quickly followed Twentynines growth with television production beginning in 1965; however due to air travel time constraints the studios built their own sets rather than using those used for movies which resulted in increased traffic congestion on Palm Springs Boulevard near Mulholland Drive during filming days thereby causing more inconvenience to residents than entertainment value
