The Coast Guard was founded in 1915 as the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1972, it was renamed the Coast Guard Reserve and then the Coast Guard. The first Coast Guard station in Twentynine Palms was established on April 1, 1916. The present station is located at 6755 East Marine Drive. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has donated many of its unique pieces of equipment to local law enforcement agencies around Southern California. Some of these items include: a 1940s-era motorboat, a Boeing 727 cockpit simulator for police officers, and an American Airlines Boeing 727 passenger plane that served as a training ground for rookie officers from 1992-1996. In recent years, the Coast Guard has also made donations to various community organizations including United WayTwentynine Palms, Hope For HumanityTwentynine Palms (HPH), Special Olympics Twentynine Palms/Long Beach County and numerous others throughout Southern California.

The Twentynine Palms Coast Guard Station was established in 1935. The station became a full-time Coast Guard unit in 1951 and was renamed the Twentynine Palms Coast Guard Station/Marines on October 1, 1955. On July 1, 1969, the station became part of the Los Angeles Department of Harbor and Water Management. In 1992, the station absorbed the Marine Patrol Squadrons of Marina del Rey and Pacific Beach into its command. On November 15, 1996, the Coast Guard Station/Marines merged with the City of Newport Beach's police department to form a single law enforcement agency called Newport Beach Police Department.

The city was founded in 1911 by Captain George Hearst, who arrived there from San Francisco with his new paper company. Twentynine Palms is a census-designated place in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 8,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The town was founded by Coeur d'Alene Indians in 1910 on the site of what is now a military base and airport. The name came from its position between Point Loma and Balboa Park. In 1959, Twentynine Palms became an incorporated city. In 1963, the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton opened on the same site as Terminal Island Airport and Twentynine Palms annexed it to become one municipality with its own government and police force; this gave rise to the nickname "City of Angels." That year, also saw the opening of Disneyland which would later merge with Walt Disney World Resort in 1971 to form Walt Disney World Resorts Worldwide Incorporated (the current company). In 1984, TWENTY-NINE PALMS hosted both Los Angeles Dodgers home games at Dodger Stadium during their season-long boycott of Los Angeles because of then-Governor Pete Wilson's sponsorship ban against baseball at state universities;[1] after that game, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presented Dodgers owner Walter Reuther with a plaque that reads "Herein lies our genesis - two great American teams playing together for love rather than money."[2] A few years later in 1988, when TWENTY-NINE PALMS voted to annex City Heights into its Municipal Government,[3] it joined other cities including El Cajon and Escondido which had done so since 1964 or earlier as part of efforts by county officials to consolidate municipalities into larger areas that could be served by a single police department and better funded infrastructure.[4][5][6][7][8] In 1990 John Sperling who had been CEO/CFO Qualcomm from 1986 until his retirement succeeded Don Baer who had retired four years earlier as president/CEO Qualcomm operations division effective January 1st 1989.[9] He announced plans forTWENTYNINE PALMS Regional Airport located adjacent to City Heights Industrial Area known then as North Valley Airport now known as Lindbergh Field Airport within 5 miles (8 km)of downtownSanDiegoanda new 3rd runway designated Runway 9L/27R &new taxiway designated TWA flight line parallel & southwesterly aligned w runway 9L runways 27R & 28L providing ample accessfor Gulfstream Jets operations.[10][11][12] After much public opposition Mexican Consulate General closed office hours Dec 151989 due to lack of qualified personnel
In 1821, the Mexican government granted land to J.B. Wilshire for a ranch on Twentynine Palms Boulevard in what is now Beverly Hills. The land was given to him in exchange for his helping to overthrow the Mexican government. On November 12, 1824, California became a U.S. territory when it was acquired from Mexico via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The United States Post Office established an office at Twentynine Palms as part of its efforts to establish mail service between California and other parts of the country. In 1863, Twentynine Palms was purchased by businessman Henry Clay Frick and turned into a spa town with hundreds of rooms and gardens that are still used today as a luxury retreat or summer home.
