Twentynine Palms is a small town in California, located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The town was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1868 as part of a larger settlement known as Cedar City. Twentynine Palms became an incorporated community in 1916. The population of the town was 15,000 in 2009 and has since decreased to 10,000. The name "Twentynine Palms" comes from its original location on twenty-third parallel east, which was three days' ride from Los Angeles by stagecoach. A post office called Cedar City was established at this spot on October 3, 1868, and remained in operation until May 14, 1900. In 1916, the name of the town changed to Twentynine Palms after it became part of Imperial County and then San Bernardino County. At that time it had a population of 10,000 people and declined to 9,999 in 2009 due to various factors including commuting costs and other changes within California’s population growth patterns over that period; however there is still considerable development activity taking place within the boundaries of Twentynine Palms today. The first permanent residents arrived in 1869 when Brigham Young's company sent seventy men across the desert searching for new land for their religious colony. The first buildings were erected near what is now known as First Street and Central Avenue; these were used as barracks for LDS members during their early exploratoryphase before they set out for Oregon Trail settlements such as Salt Lake City or Stroudsburg (now Downey). By 1873 most Mormons had left Cedar City due to lack of water or grazing opportunities but some families stayed behind to build homes around what is now Second Street and Western Avenue. These structures remain extant today: numbers 2-6 Second Street building are currently home to Lakeside Village LLC (a condominium complex), while number 5 Third Street remains an occasional stoplight on Highway 395 northbound between Riverside Drive/Western Avenue and Interstate 805 southbound between Adventist Memorial Hospital Regional Park Boulevard/Second Street; all other buildings have been demolished or replaced since they were built+. In 1906 Twentynine Palms experienced its first tornado outbreak which destroyed thirteen homes; one notable resident at the time was George Westlake who helped erect temporary insurance offices during that disaster.. Over ensuing years many more tornados struck Twentynine Palms with only two fatalities reported until 1950 when a devastating fire destroyed most of the downtown business district; fortunately no human lives were lost but much damage occurred both inside and outside those charred shells.. In spite of this catastrophic event some entrepreneurs quickly rebuilt downtown using local materials where possible although parking lots continued to be available along FirstStreet through 1960 due To later developments adjacentToIRPBA Iver Echols Coliseum & Stadium Parking Facility

In 1922, the community amalgamated with nearby Beaumont to form Beaumont-Twentynine Palms. In 1951, the United States Congress passed legislation designating Twentynine Palms as a national Historic District for its local history and architecture. The district includes nine buildings that were built between 1911 and 1922: three homes of citrus growers who founded Twentynine Palms, two churches, and one school building.
