In 1865 Twentynine Palms was incorporated as a town within Grant's artillery district with a population of seventy-six people including twenty-four women and four children living in tents on land donated by Jeptha Gentry at what is now Fourth Street SW corner Sixth Avenue NE

Twentynine Palms is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 66,711 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Greater LA area. It lies on the edge of the San Fernando Valley and was founded by Europeans in 1881 as Rancho Santa Anita. In 1923, it became a city and has since grown to become one of Southern California's most populous cities. The City of Twentynine Palms was officially incorporated on February 22nd, 1922 by then-Mayor Harry Houdini and City Councilman Artemas Byrd with a population of just 10 people. At its incorporation, Twentynine Palms boasted an unincorporated rural area that stretched from Downtown to Rolling Hills Estates (now Reseda). The original land that would eventually comprise Twentynine Palms was acquired from developer James Phelan for $4 million in 1921. Once development began on what would become known as Rancho Santa Anita Boulevard east of downtown Los Angeles, many civic organizations were formed to help support such efforts: the Chamber of Commerce & Industry organized golf tournaments and other events; the Los Angeles Municipal Water District organized hookups for citizens during times of drought; and Rotary Clubs sponsored agricultural fairs which attracted buyers from throughout Southern California. In 1923, when Twentynine Palms became a city, it had an estimated population of 15 people! Today’s estimate puts the city’s population at over 66 thousand residents – more than any other U.S.–based city with over 60 000 residents!Twentynine Palms has always been an important community within our region – home to many businesses and families who rely on our economic vitality and quality-of-life options! On Twentynine Palms, California history begins with the first European settlement in September 1800 by Capt. David justify and his men on the Rancho San Jacinto. The town was founded as a sheep ranch but soon became an agricultural center with citrus fruit, livestock, and a small population. In 1906, the state legislature designated Twentynine Palms as a city of Los Angeles County. On November 15, 1942, during World War II, Japanese forces landed at Twentynine Palms from airfields in Southern California and began to occupy the town. The Japanese were tried for war crimes and some residents were interned in concentration camps until 1945.
