Twentynine Palms is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 58,953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose–Sunnyvale–Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is located on the shore of San Francisco Bay and its motto is "The City That Never Sleeps." The name Twentynine Palms comes from two locations: one in Antelope Valley near Redwood City, which had been given to a group of soldiers who had left for duty in Mexico City during World War II; and another in Twentynine Palms Cove on San Francisco Bay, which was given to military officer James Waugh by his predecessor as commander of Naval Base Point Reyes. In 1887 William Moulton Marston patented what would become known as Marston's Land around present-day Twentynine Palms Cove. The town began to form soon afterwards with three small villages - North Twentynine Palms (later North Hollywood), South Twentynine Palms and East Twentynine Palms - each electing one mayor and eight trustees. In 1915, when Mission Santa Clara de Asís (mission) was founded within walking distance ofTwentyninePalmsoverthrowingsandstormstodestroyit,themayorsandtrusteesdecidedtolocalize their operations under one roof. THEN ON APRIL 26TH OF 1927 THEY ADDED EAST TWENTYNINE PALMS ALSO . ALL THESE ADDRESSES ARE PREVIOUSLY KNOWN AS MARSTON'S LAND . Twentynine Palms, California is located in Southern California and was part of the Mexican Empire. It became part of the United States of America after Mexico's defeat in the American Civil War. The area now known as Twentynine Palms was once used for ranching and farming, but has since become a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful weather and wonderful history. The first European to set foot on what is now Twentynine Palms was Spanish explorer Don Antonio de Mendoza y Pacheco on September 2, 1542. He named it "Towson" after Count Alessandro Towson, captain of the Spanish vessel Santiago de Todos Santos which sighted land off Point Conception on October 12, 1542. There were no permanent residents until 1853 when Colonel James Wolkert found gold near present-day North Beach. In 1854,twenty acres (8 hectares) of San Diego County land including Twentynine Palms were donated by Simeon Bockman to be developed into a town with a population of 100 people called "Bockmanville". The town never materialized because investors failed to come up with money to build roads or support businesses. In 1886, an act passed by Congress earmarked TwentyninePalms for military installation purposes; however this idea never came about because there was not enough money available to build barracks or other infrastructure necessary for such an undertaking. The first post office at Twentynine Palms opened in 1887; it served as a stop along the Butterfield Overland Mail route from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City via Tucson and Phoenix. In 1909, local photographer Jens Jacobsen built his studio here and began taking pictures that would soon be famous around the world including some depictingTwentynine Palms scenes such as The Great Gatsby (1916). By 1922,twenty two years after he founded his studio hereJens Jacobsen had transformed TwentyninPalm into one ofthe most popular tourist destinations in Southern California
