Twentynine Palms is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 33,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Twentynine Palms was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The town's name comes from two Pines – one near where the present day Pershing Boulevard and Torrance Boulevard meet, and another located east of the intersection of Las Olivas Avenue and Pershing Boulevard. In 1853, Twentynine Palms became an independent incorporated city under state law following a referendum by residents on December 12th of that year. On July 1st of that year it merged with neighboring Wilmington to form the new City of Orange. Twentynine Palms is today a cultural district with over 100 contributing businesses including restaurants, hotels, theaters, and galleries. It also contains several important historical sites such as the John C Fremont House and Garden Museum, which are open to visitors every day from 9am to 5pm.
