Twentynine Palms is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 59,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and about 25 miles south of Pasadena. The city was founded in 1911 by developers named George Hirsch and his brother Harry. The name came from their Twentynine Palms estate which had been divided into three estates: Two were for employees of the Hirsch brothers' father-in-law Louis Bowers; one for themselves; and one for their mother-in-law Alice Palmer. In 1928, developer Samuel Ziegler bought One Hundred Acres (later renamed Twentynine Palms), a large piece of undeveloped land east of what is now Central Park Drive, and began to build a community there called "Ziegler's Hills".Initially it was only single family homes but soon grew to include more than 120 villages including small businesses, a movie theater, health club, grocery store and other services.
