It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino–Ontario Micropolitan Statistical Area. It covers an area of 9 square miles (23 km²). The first European to visit Twentynine Palms was Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà on November 7, 1769. He named it Encinas and reported finding "a most beautiful garden." The city's name may derive from this report or from nearby Orange County about which Portola wrote: "the people there are very rude and ungrateful" so he changed his plans for exploration to travel through Orange County instead. A company town began to form around Encinas in 1851 when farmers bought land near what is now Fallbrook and built cabins, including one known as the Hotel de la Concha. Agricultural productivity grew rapidly here during the late 19th century due to rich soil and new irrigation systems developed by Major John Condon across La Plata Valley. By 1906,twenty-one businesses had been established in Twentynine Palms with over $1 million in annual sales; twenty-four percent of the total local economy was agricultural production that year! In 1915 Mayor Haddon Sperry called for a public referendum on annexation into Los Angeles; results showed eighty-six percent against annexation but because of growing pressure from then Mayor James Jahnke (who unsuccessfully opposed annexation)Twentynine Palms became part of Los Angeles on December 3, 1915. At that time its population was only forty-one residents and seventy-seven businesses! Today’s population has grown significantly with more than four hundred residents and ninety businesses located within walking distance of Thalia Hall Casino Resort & Spa! During World War II Twentynine Palms played host to thousands of military personnel who were stationed at nearby Riverside Air Force Base; many buildings still remain today including the Officers Clubhouse which served as officers’ quarters until 1961 when it was replaced by barracks for Army musician unit 5th Marine Regiment - now 4th Marine Regiment - nicknamed “the Mules” due to their use of mules for transportation between bases during field deployments. In 1970 two major renovations were made toTwentyninePalmSatelliteHighSchool which included enlarging classrooms, improving hallways and adding a new gymnasium/auditorium/hallway system…….. twenty students currently attend TWPHS classes using technology supplied by Blackboard Incorporated…..Today ThaliaHallCasinoResort&Spa cumulates nearly $100 million annually in economic activity generating over 1,500 jobs statewide!
