In 1962 it became a city under the name of Irvine when parts of Anaheim were annexed by Los Angeles County. It changed its name again in 1984 when it became part of Orange County after becoming bypassed by other cities on OC's eastern border such as Fullerton and Huntington Beach. Twentynine Palms is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 43,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and the San Gabriel Valley. The name comes from its location on the Twenty-Third Street arm of Mission Bay. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Kern County was made by Father Junipero Serra in 1769 on Rancho La Brea (now part of Paramount), about four miles northeast of modern Twentynine Palms. Father Serra named his new land After St. John's Vineyard in England because he had been there when wine was first tasted in that country. A small posse of ranch hands began to arrive here beginning in 1857 and gradually more settlers came overland, starting with George Hearn, who arrived around 1859. By 1860, there were ninety-six people living here and seven Adobe Walls had been built to protect them from Indians working the nearby missions for distinction as well as trade with Mission Bay ashore and inland. In 1866, Don Pedro Menendez established a store at present-day downtown Twentynine Palms after purchasing Rancho la Brea from Father Serra for $5 per acre (1/4 acres = $100). He started shipping goods he had raised on his property up the Sacramento River valley to market via a ferry across town creek which he called "The Ferry Landing." Menendez became an important figure in earlyTwentyninePalms history as one of its leading merchants and civic leaders; his store remains a significant force local and statewide today. In 1872 Menendez married Dolores de los Rios y Cisneros; they would have six children together before she died suddenly two years later at age 37 while giving birth to their seventh child at her home; he continued to run his business until his death 33 years later outsmarted by outside forces including Prohibitionism In 1907 Ethel Merman starred opposite Humphrey Bogart in "A Streetcar Named Desire"at Twentynine Palms' then only theater which seats 2256 spectators (the original cost: $2 million).
