Ukiah is a town in Shasta County, California, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ukiah post office has been in operation since 1859. The area that now makes up Ukiah was first inhabited by the Klamath people and their ancestors dating back to about 8,000 BC. In 1821, Russian fur traders visited Ukiah and made a trade with the Klamath tribe for goods they were selling along the way to Siberia. A small community developed on what is now Main Street near the river where Russian Pioneers erected a log cabin in 1826. This early community was named "Ukiah" after nearby Urca (now Vacaville), Russia. In 1850, settlers from Northern California arrived at what is now Main Street and began construction of a sawmill which would become one of the largest in California. By 1870, there were over twenty businesses located around town including gristmills, bakery ovens and flour mills powered by water power from local rivers or lakes. In 1905, when San Francisco became an city limits following its incorporation as a county within California, Ukiah lost much of its importance as it lay within city boundaries only. However it regained some importance after trustees decided that all business within city limits should be conducted through the new County Hall building which still stands today on Fourth Street between Center and University Streets in downtown Ukiah—though most activities currently take place out-of-town at various businesses located north of 4th Street). During World War II many men served in military service with distinction including Artilleryman James Hargrave who received his Medal of Honor for leading an artillery company during Operation Neptune’s Spear against Japanese forces at Buna beach on December 5th 1945; Joseph Pappas also received his Medal of Honor for commanding Company C5/7th Cavalry during fighting around Mission Ridge on February 15th 1944 while under fire from Japanese tanks

In 1946, the Coast Guard became an independent agency and began its current mission of protecting America's coasts and waterways. Flynn of New York presented a framed certificate from President Woodrow Wilson recognizing the United States Coast Guard for its role in preventing piracy on our waters. From then on, gifts from individuals or groups honoring members of the Coast Guard have become commonplace throughout History! Throughout World War II, donations were made by Americans all over the country in order to support our military effort. One such donation occurred when General John J. Pershing presented a gold watch valued at $10,000 to Commandant James Molineux of New York City's Marine Barracks (now Roosevelt Island). This gesture is often remembered because it helped contribute to USA victory against Japan! Since becoming an independent agency, the Coast Guard has continued to provide valuable services to both citizens and military personnel alike. For example, in 1991, Commander Dean Sprague presenting a $50,- 000 checkmarked "For Memorial Service" at Governors' Ball marked one of many memorable moments during Commodore Ray Carney's tenure asCOMMANDANT OF COAST GUARD 1982-1991 !!! Ukiah is a small town located in the Sacramento Valley of California, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ukiah became a city on December 12, 1975, when it was annexed by Sacramento. The first inhabitants of what is now Ukiah were Native American people who lived near present day Yuba and Placer counties. In 1824, Russian fur trader Pavel Chistyanchkin discovered wine grapesgrowing in what is now Ukiah and decided to make some for himself. The first wine made here was called "Russian River" because it came from Russia. The name "Ukiah" means "[place where] there are many salmon." In 1849, Californios founded Grantville which became the nucleus around whichukiah grew up as a thriving agricultural community with close ties to its surrounding communities such as Yuba City and Arden Heights. By 1860, Ukiah had become home to over 1,000 residents and prospered as an early example of water distribution systems being developed independently of state government control During World War II Ujianians collaborated with other parts of California in helping feed troops fighting in Europe while refusing to provide food for their own citizens In 1966, after years of planning by Mayor Dick Fenton and City Councilmember Don Kappelmeyer ,the city laid out its main streets grid system including arterial streets (north-south)and industrial Boulevard (east-west). For much of that decade local businesses continued to be organized into blocks or “families” with hundreds or even thousands of employees each The rapid growth throughout the 1970s led to increasingly tight regulation by local officials which caused numerous problems for businesses and individuals alike In 1978 James Waddell purchased 50% interest in US Airways System Incorporated which later merged with Delta Air Lines becoming one company . This event helped spur business activity along Main Street spurring new development including two large banks (First National Bank & Trust Company - now Wells Fargo ) plus several hundred small businesses . In addition many new homes were built during this time period thanks largely to both federal stimulus funds under President George H W Bush as well as private investment Population growth slowed gradually starting around 2000 but has since resumed overall
