Ukiah is a small town in California, located about an hour north of San Francisco. The population was estimated at around 20,000 in 2010. It is the seat of Ukiah County and is part of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Ukiah was George Lane, who arrived in 1848. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1859 and became one of the leading commercial centers in Northern California. In 1916, Ukiah voters passed a resolution declaring themselves "an open air democracy." The community experienced some rapid growth during World War II when many Americans moved to Ukiah to work on defense projects or join the military. However, most Ukiah residents remained largely self-sufficient until after the war ended and economic conditions began to improve beginning in the early 1960s. In recent years, there has been increasing development near and withinukia limits as businesses seek access to new markets and land parcels have become available for development outside of downtown or along main streets. This has led to increased traffic congestion on both local streets and general highway corridors; however, those efforts are often met with opposition from residents who feel that more dense development will lead to increased crime rates and less access to traditional resources such as shopping malls and shared use trails that would provide opportunities for public engagement with their neighborhoods.

Ukiah is a city in the U.S. state of California, on the north coast of the San Francisco Peninsula. The population was 24,591 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Sonoma County after Santa Rosa. It is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco and about 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Petaluma. The first known inhabitants were Native Americans who lived near what is now Ukiah before settling down around 1800. The town began as a small fishing village on tidal flats at low tide then slowly grew as people started to build homes and businesses around 1820. By 1854, when it became part of Alameda County, Ukiah had a post office, nine churches and over 100 residents. In 1886, two brothers named Jenssen bought 7 acres (3 hectares) in what is now downtown Ukiah for $5 per acre (2/km²). They named their tract "Utopia" because they saw it as an ideal place to settle agricultural land that could support crops year-round instead of just during summer months when sea levels were low enough for farming boats to dock and load goods ashore. The brothers built a cabin and started farming their new land which soon became the largest cotton plantation ever operated in California outside East Texas. The town's growth continued with additions such as a millrace from 1892 that led to increased trade with nearby towns like Petaluma and redwood country; three schools; four stores; two churches; one school board meeting room; seven residences; one jail; two blacksmith shops; five upholsterers' shops ; twelve farmhands employed by Jenssen's enterprise including eighty workers who dug ditches, built roads and fences, graded fields, planted trees, harvested grapeseed orchards etc.; twenty-six dogs kept by Jenssen employees while he worked on his plantation plus ten more hired out to other farmers during off hours or during Carnival season when many families would go into town for entertainment purposes only to return home early without buying anything local
In 1846, the United States of America acquired what is now Ukiah Valley from the Independent California Colony of California. The area had been drained for agriculture and grazing by Native Americans for centuries before then, but U.S. officials believed that a new town could be built in this valley as an important regional center for trade and industry. They formalized their plans in 1852 when they founded the city of Ukiah with a population of just over 100 people. The first structures were built in what is now downtown Ukiah, including the original courthouse and jail. In 1861, construction began on the first enclosed public square in Ukiah – Market Square – which would become one of the main commercial areas of the city. weekly markets continued to be held here until around 1916 when they were moved to other parts of town due to increased regulation by local authorities. One significant development during the early years of Ukiah was its role as a stop on stagecoaches travelling between San Francisco and Sacramento via Stockton and Visalia; many passengers would disembark at Ukiah during these trips. In 1865, Caltrain arrived in town, making it possible for residents and visitors to enjoy easy access to both San Francisco and Sacramento without having to leave their homes or visit either city twice! During World War II, much effort was put into increasing production withinUkiah Valley so that it could contribute significantly to wartime munitions production throughout nearby Vallejo and Petaluma counties; much brick building took place here during this time as well as numerous industrial sites such as two small foundries located near present-day Plaza de la Concordia Shopping Center (now home to JCPenney) and several garment factories employed more than 10,000 workers during World War II alone!
