Ukiah, California is a small town located in the Soquel Valley on the east coast of Santa Cruz County, California. It was founded by Captain John C. Griggs and his wife, Mary Ann (Nelson). The first post office in Ukiah was established on July 1, 1878. In 1886, the population of Ukiah was 592 people. By 1910, it had grown to 1,158 people. In 1916, Mrs. Griggs donated land for a public school district and the town name changed from Nelson to Ukiah due to its similarity to England's village of Uxbridge. On January 14th of 1927 the first high school building opened in Ukiah when Leland Stanford High School opened its doors. In 1941, during World War II, American Naval Base Noah's Ark became an important training ground for naval aviation personnel of the United States Navy and RAF squadron No 3485 'Ark Royal'. The airfield closed in 1945 but several hangars remain standing around today as part of nature Preserve #8 near US 101 and Hwy 299 In 1922-1923 there were two vehicle fires at Uxbridge Lake which started with matchboxes found behind a shed on what is now State Route 128 about one mile south of present day Ukiah limits (and still visible).
