Ukiah, California is a small town located on the coast of Northern California. The population as of 2010 was approximately 15,000 people. It is located in Placer County and is part of the greater Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley region. The town was founded in 1849 by Captain George Dixon and his wife Elizabeth while they were on their way to Oregon from New York City. They named it after the Ukiah River which they had seen in a map. The first permanent settler in Ukiah was James Waddell who arrived in 1851. He built a cabin on what is now North Main Street and started trading with Native Americans. In 1861, Britain granted land to America at Point Arena for building warships undersea and designating it as Utopia Bayou Reserve; this area included present day Ukiah. In 1872, Captain Dixon's son Commodore George Dixon donated land southeast of the current town center for a lighthouse and wharf which became known as the Commodore Dixon Lighthouse Park. The Lighthouse was completed in 1875 and remains an important landmark today. Ukiah has several museums including the Samuel Goldwyn Film Archive (founded 1978), California State University Museum of History (founded 1959), American Folklife Center (founded 1970), Dowling Museum of Art (founded 1966) and Southern Pacific Railroad Depot Museum (opened 1964). Ukiah is a town located in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 28,871 at the 2010 census. It is named after the Ukiah River and its confluence with the Merced River. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1827, when Captain John Foust and his party of soldiers were sent by General David Cushing to survey a land grant on the south bank of the river. The town began as a small settlement on an elevation above downtown known as "The Top." In 1868, residents voted to change their name to Ukiah after petitioning then-Governor William Gold Rush inducted them into incorporation. The town was formally incorporated on March 25, 1870. In 1906, it adopted an ordinance forbidding smoking in all public places. Ukiah became one of America's leading winegrowing regions during Prohibition; its vineyards produced some of the most prestigious red wines in the world. During World War II, Ukiah served as an Army airfield and post office between San Francisco and Oakland; later it became home to several factories manufacturing munitions for both sides in the war including Kaiser Aluminum Company and Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. In November 1969, Ulibarri Reservoir was created from portions of Sheep Rock Creek watershed that drained into Uligarri Lake adjacent to the towns limits. The reservoir has been used for irrigating local crops since 1915; today it provides drinking water for about half a million people within radius of Ukiah proper and nearly 2 million people within 5 miles around its perimeter via water systems serving areas surrounding it such as Pleasanton, Livermore and Dublintownships

The area that is now Ukiah was part of San Francisco Bay Area until 1846 when it became part of what is now Santa Clara County. In 1853, the town of Ukiah was founded by John C. Fremont and James Irvine. In 1906, Ukiah was incorporated as a city.
