Ukiah is a town located in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and ishome to Stanford University and UC Berkeley. Ukiah is also home to the Ukiah Folk Festival which takes place every year in late October or early November. The first people to live in what is now Ukiah were the Ohlone Native Americans who lived near present-day downtown. The first permanent Europeans to arrive were Franciscan missionaries, who built a small chapel on Rancho San José east of town in 1847. In 1875, John Coston, an American entrepreneur and real estate developer, purchased 3 acres (1 km2) of land south of town from the Missionaries for $10 per acre ($240 per hectare). This site became Coston’s initial commercial center with stores, a post office and a school opened here in 1876. In 1909, Jens Jensen came to Ukiah from Denmark with his family to start farming wheat on 10 acres (4 hectares). He named his farm “Jensen’s Valley” after his father-in-law Jens Rasmussen who had started farming there about 1870. That same year began what would become one of the most important periods for the growth of Ukiah – its incorporation as a city. On December 12, 1909 by act of City Council #438 it was voted by common vote that all citizens over 21 years old should be registered with city government and given voting rights within six months…. Mr. Jensen took advantage of this registration process by contesting all local elections held during that time… resulting in him becoming Mayor Of The City Of Ukiah….. After being elected Mayor he pushed through many changes including annexing portions of present day Daly City & parts of Millbrae intothe city limits…. In 1935 MrUxiah annexed part of Millbrae intotheCity Limits but retained its name as an independent community

Ukiah (population: 3,000) is a small town in Mendocino County, California, United States. The name is derived from the Wampanoag word "uek-a-yi" meaning "bayou." The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Ukiah were Jedediah Smith and his party of explorers in 1821. At that time the area was part of the Rancho Arroyo de la Purificalación grant to José Joaquin Moraga. In 1848, when California became a state, Ukiah became its capital. It continued to serve as the seat of government until 1851 when Sacramento was chosen as its new capital. The post office at Ukiah remained open until it closed on July 1, 1861 due to low mail volume. In 1870, it merged with nearby Redwood City to form one large city with a population of around 10,000 people. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location near several important railroad lines and other industrial areas which generated jobs for locals and increased commerce within the city limits. However, during World War II Ukiah Contributing Element No. 4 played an important role in helping munitions production at nearby Bechtel Corporation's Bechtel National Laboratory; this contributed significantly to the war effort and helped make Ukiah one of America's most bustling cities during wartime periods
