The Ukiah Rifle Club was founded in 1892. The club has been a part of the community since then and currently meets monthly at the Ukiah Rifle Range. In 1899, the club upgraded to a rifle range and hosted its first major event, an annual match between teams from different towns in Sonoma County.

Ukiah is a small town located in the Central Coast region of California. The population was 3,437 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sonoma County metropolitan area. In 1821, Captain James Cook discovered Vancouver Island while sailing through the Pacific Ocean and named it after his patron saint, Jesus Christ himself—Vancouver Island became British Columbia when Canada became a nation in 1867). Commodore George Vancouver appointedAccountant-General Sir Alexander Mackenzie to explore North America east of Mexico City with two parties: one under Captain James Cook's command sailed around Cape Horn on HMS Erebus; the other led by Rear Admiral David Thompson sailed northwest along Alaska's Yukon Territory coast before reaching Prince Rupert's Land about Hudson Bay on July 1st, 1789. On July 4th they sighted land which they knew to be Vancouver Island and called ittis place Lord Nelson because he had been Admiral Royal Navy during World War II as Commander-in-Chief Atlantic Fleet (HMS Rodney). After seven days' navigation they arrived off False Cape - where Vancouver had originally landed - at noon on July 12th finding no sign of life or human habitation but finding lying upon its surface over 1600 lbs (700 kg)of silver nitrate! Ukiah was founded in 1849 by Captain John H. Stephenson, who came from London and started a fur-trading business. The town was named after the River Ukiah which flows through it. In 1854, the town was incorporated as a city with a population of 100 residents. The first mayor of Ukiah was James Fenton. In 1865, the town had a post office and two hotels. A fire destroyed all of the businesses in 1886 and the population decreased to 30 residents. In 1889, the city granted permission to build a small water tower on State Route 20. The tower is still standing today and is used for public transportation. In 1895, Ukiah became an annexe to San Francisco and its citizens were transferred to that city's government. In 1906, Ukiah annexed part of Santa Clara County and its citizens were transferred to that county's government also.
