Ukiah is an unincorporated community located in Mendocino County, California, United States. It lies along the Ukiah River at the foot of Mount Shasta. The population was 2,664 at the 2000 census. The first recorded mention of Ukiah was in 1827 when it was called "Ukehia". The name means "place where there are grapes" in the local Native American language. A post office was established at Ukiah in 1853, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1862, a group of men from Red Bluff founded a rancho on what is now the east side of Ukiah River. They renamed their holdings Rancho Ukiah after their home town of Red Bluff, England. In 1872, John Cushing became interested in land near Ukiah and donated 4 acres (1 km²) to be developed as a town site. He named it Ukiah after his home country and planned to build a mill here to produce flour for sale across the Pacific Ocean to markets in North America and Europe. However, because he lacked title to the land, construction never began and only 8 acres (3 km²) were ever developed into what is today downtown Ukehia. Many early residents came from Northern California's Central Valley including farmers who had leased or bought land north of Yreka; contractors who built railroads between Sacramento and Stockton; lumberjacks working on timber cuts down near Mill Creek; miners looking for rich deposits of silver ore on Mt Shasta; and women coming north to work as nurses during World War I. In 1898 two brothers - Edwin Murchison and George Hough - started a grocery store on Center Street that would become one of the most successful businesses in town. By 1920 there were 425 people living in Ukehia with about 75% being Germans or Irish Americans fleeingamine-era potato faminespurging Ireland during its time as an independent republic following independence from Great Britain). There is no one definitive answer to this question, as the history of the national guard has evolved over time. However, some historians believe that the first national guard units were organized in 1792 during the French Revolution. At that time, France had a system in place where military members could be drafted into service on a temporary basis, and so a group of officers among the general population created a corps de garde (guard) to protect public installations. Additionally, there was also an amateur militia system in place which saw citizens called up to serve for short periods of time without any guarantee of compensation or benefits. Over time, these two systems merged and eventually became what we know today as the national guard. The modern national guard has its roots in World War I when America entered into combat as a member of both sides. One of the ways that America tried to support its allies was by providing troops for duty within their own country. This policy was known as “the Americanization” of the military and it helped give rise to what is now known as The National Guard. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed legislation creating The National Guard Bureau which would manage all aspects related to Guardsmen training and deployment overseas. Additionally, The National Guard was given authority to carry out civil defense functions such as disaster relief and security at major events such as parades and carnivals. As America fought World War II, there was an increased demand for guardsmen due to fears around potential treachery or sabotage on both sides at home and abroad. As soldiers began serving tours of duty throughout Europe and Asia they came back with stories about how dangerous it could be inside Nazi concentration camps or Japanese POW camps where guards routinely tortured inmates with electric shocks or burned them alive! In addition, many Americans felt that their government wasn’t doing enough to help prepare for war because resources were being diverted towards other projects instead of ensuring our safety at home (such as building warships). Ukiah is a small town located in Northern California, United States. It was founded in 1847 by Captain Samuel Atkins and his wife Esther. Ukiah's history can be traced back to that time as well. In 1847, Captain Atkins and his wife set out from their home in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on a journey to find new land. They eventually landed in what is now Ukiah, California. The town was founded on the former Rancho San Lorenzo cattle ranch which was part of the Mexican land grant system during the 19th century. The original owners of the rancho were José Joaquin Mora and Manuel Nieto. After Captain Atkins and his family arrived, they started a small store called The Store at the corner of First Street and Second Avenue. From this business, the town began to grow! Over time, other businesses joined The Store including a bakery, post office and doctor's office. By 1851, Ukiah had become an active community with its own schoolhouse and jail! In 1870, captain Atkins donated land to make into a square mile for development which would later become known as Ukiah Square! This square area would come to play an important role in local culture as it served as a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. During the late 1800s through early 1900s, Ukiai experienced some major growth thanks to its proximity toSacramento County and its population of around 10-15 people! However, World War I interrupted these growth trends; however WWI didn't have any significant impact on nearby Ukiah Square which continued to serve as an important center for community life until after WWII when it slowly lost its significance due to suburbanization (Moses & Meier 2003).
