U.S. Route 101 enters the city of Ukiah from the east on a two-lane road and becomes an expressway as it crosses the Umpqua River. The route continues as an expressway through the city, becoming concurrent with California Route 1A. It intersects Interstate 5 in downtown Ukiah before crossing over to California Route 2 and becoming a freeway. The route crosses into Oregon after traveling for several miles as a combined highway/expressway, eventually reaching its eastern terminus at Interstate 5 south of Bend, Oregon.
