Ukiah is a town in the Central California Coast Range, located about 24 miles east of San Francisco on Highway 101. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Stockton-San Joaquin Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Ukiah was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on November 2, 1542. The area that now comprises Ukiah was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century as part of Rancho San Lorenzo de Padua. In 1851, John Green and his brother-in-law Wm. Halsey bought 5,000 acres (20 km²) of land adjacent to modern day Ukiah from Manuel Nieto and founded Mission San Antonio de la Salle on it; they named their new town after their patron saint, St Anthony of Padua. In 1876, James Irvine built an irrigation system along parts of present day US 101 near where it crosses Little Creek; this became one of the main reasons for developing Ukiah into a small town during the early 20th century despite its rural location. The Irvine Company also developed many other industries in and around Ukiah over time such as textiles and fruits/veggies production before disbanding in 1984 following a merger with Dole Foods. In recent years there has been renewed interest in downtown redevelopment including mixed use development and significant investment from local businesses which has led to increased retail activity throughout the community as well as restaurateurs filling up almost all existing storefronts downtown since construction began on what would become known as "the District." Additionally, several new bars have opened recently adjoining Depot Square which offers views of Golden Gate Bridge across Cherry Street just south of Main Street (now Broadway).
Ukiah was founded in 1824 by Capt. George Fenton and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for a small stream that ran through the community. The site of the present day Ukiah was first claimed by Captain Fenton in 1822 when he noticed a small valley between Mount Hamilton and Mount Shasta with no trees or water supply. In 1824, Captain Fenton sent out an expedition to find the location of the stream. Upon return, he reported that he had found it and named the settlement after it. The first post office in Ukiah opened on July 1, 1825. The name of the town changed from "Ukiha" to "Ukiah" on January 1, 1827 due to objections from other towns in Alameda County about using their names as part of a local name before they were given official status by county officials. In 1850, during California's gold rush period, Ukiah became one of the most important settlement sites because of its valuable mineral rights near Sutter Creek Road and Highway 24
