Union City is a city in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 26,895 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Joaquin County and the county seat of San Joaquin. The first Europeans to visit what is now Union City were Spanish explorers who passed through the area on their way to explore more of Northern California in 1769. They named it "San Rafael" after Saint Raphael, a bishop in Jerusalem who helped spread Christianity to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). In 1875, when California became a state, Union City became its capital. In 1887, four miles north of downtown Union City was founded Pioneer Heights by businessmen John Sutter and George Hearst as an agricultural colony for people from Northern California interested in farming new land. The town grew rapidly because it offered good soils and easy access to water resources for irrigation. By 1920, Pioneer Heights had become one of the largest towns in northern California with over 100 businesses and five thousand residents. In 1930 it merged with neighboring Livermore to form Livermore Valley; Livermore Valley remains today as one of Northern Californias major cities despite its small size compared to other metropolitan areas such as Sacramento or Anaheim hills. In 1937 Union City was designated an inner-city community by then Mayor Franklin D. Roosevelt due to concerns about high crime rates within its limits combined with poor housing conditions among its African American residents living near BART Station (now known as Diridon Station). Since passage of Proposition 187 (1994) which effectively banned bilingual education in most public schools across southern California – including Union City – many Hispanic immigrants have since moved into Union City's core business districts while others have established themselves outside of town limits looking for opportunities similar to those available before Proposition 187 made English only an option once again inside most school boundaries throughout Southern California communities like Los Angeles and Orange County where Hispanics make up almost 60% of all residents - not just39% within municipal boundaries like that found within much larger jurisdictions like San Joaquin County! Consequently today there are very few Latino-owned businesses left located within any sizable portion of downtown or even much beyond that CBD orbit around Interstate 580/I-880 junction east side near Diridon Station - though Mexican restaurant chain El Azteca has continued operations until recently functioning primarily outlying suburban locations served by large shuttle buses quickly making getaway if needed! Paradoxically this may be changing as increasing numbers both inner city & outer suburbians are choosing more walkable neighborhoods closer Downtown & I-580 corridor rather than take long bus trips away from restaurants they patronize nearer home...such choices increasingly reflect overall trend towards increased autopooling & intergenerational socializing thru cellphone apps among younger generations which increasingly prefer smaller dense centers surrounded by proximate amenities while they live & work nearby

The name of Union City comes from its location on the banks of the Santa Ana River near what was then known as Mission Santa Anita. The first post office in Union City opened on December 12, 1873. At that time, it was part of El Cajon. In 1881, Union City became an independent city and incorporated as a result of an act of Congress passed by Governor George Prentice Johnson. The original downtown area included three blocks east of Main Street between 6th and 7th Streets (the present day corner of Euclid Avenue and 5th Street). This section had become known as "The Brick District" because many buildings were built out of large bricks which wereahan used to build streets and sidewalks in that area. In 1902, townspeople passed a resolution to rename their town "Union CITY", after the New York Botanical Garden which had just been founded nearby. The name stuck and has been used ever since for Union City residents as well as for the entire San Bernardino County municipality which includes portions within Union City limits
