A gift history of the Union City Army deployment can be traced back to 1855, when a detachment of soldiers from California's Second Battalion, United States Infantry arrived in the city as part of General Antonio L. Kearny's army during their campaign against Mexico. Over time, the battalion grew and changed its name to the First Regiment California Volunteer Infantry (FRCVI). In 1866, FRCVI was redesignated the First Cali- fornia Brigade (CALIB) and served in various campaigns throughout California before being called up to fight in the American Civil War. In 1861, CALIB was organized into two brigades and fought on opposite sides of the war as part of Confederate forces. On April 12th, 1861, CALIB was ordered to march through Union City on their way to battle at Bull Run Bridge. However, after reaching Union City they were halted by orders from generals Beauregard and Johnston not to cross Bull Run River but instead march northwestward towards Richmond. The brigade reached Richmond on April 26th but soon afterwards retreated south towards Petersburg due to Confederate advances towards that city. On May 3rd 1861, CALIB returned eastward via Norfolk and participated in skirmishes around Suffolk until joining General Robert Ewell's armysouth of Petersburg on May 10th. That night they Joined Ewell's main force which had successfully defended against an attempted Confederate assault at Reamsville near Petersburg. After spending some weeks siege-building at Elizabethtown Heights northeast of Petersburg it was decided that resistance would be futile and on July 2nd 1861 CALIB withdrew from Petersburg along with all other Confederate troops leaving behind a devastated cityscape. For his part in helping secure Virginia's capital during the duration of the American Civil War CALIB was posthumously awarded both an Ulysses S Grant Star Medal and a brevet promotion to lieutenant colonel for distinguished conduct in action at Gettysburg July 4th 1863; however he never received either award because he died three days later from wounds sustained during that battle

The Union City Battalion, California Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the United States Civil War. It was organized on October 15, 1861 at Fort Pointe near San Francisco and mustered in on November 3, 1861. The battalion served as a brigade unit in the Northeastern Theater of the war. On April 12, 1865 it was disbanded at Camp Funston near Richmond, Virginia.
Union City is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 44,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Union City were Juan Bautista de Anza and his expedition on November 17, 1769. They named it Nueva Vizcaya after New Spain's capital in Veracruz. It became a part of Alta California on January 14, 1846 when Mexico gained independence from Spain. The town was founded by prospectors John Sutter and others in 1859 as a dry goods store town on the east bank of the Sierra Nevada River near where it flows into the river below today's downtown Union City. By 1861 Union City had become an agricultural center with more than 100 businesses growing crops and making products such as flour, cheese, eggs, lumber and other items for export to both North America and Europe. In 1872 construction began on what would eventually become known as Yosemite National Park; Union City served as its primary site for military purposes during World War II (1939-1945). The park now includes over 20 miles (32 km) of trails that connect Yosemite Valley with nearby Half Dome, El Capitan and other high peaks within easy reach from Union Central High School across Main Street from downtown."Union City Timeline: From Settlement to National Park" In 1944-45 many local residents rallied around Jock Mahoning to support him when he ran for Congress against incumbent Hiram Johnson in hotly contested district that included much of Fresno County;Mahoning won by about 2% despite being outspent by Johnson. In 1970-71 Mayor James Dickey pushed through passage of Measure H – which raised property taxes 1% annually but failed to pass muster with most voters – two years after Proposition 13 had made vintage home values plummet throughout most Southern Californias;Dickey resigned rather than face impeachment proceedings brought against him by then Governor Ronald Reagan. Municipal services were privatized beginning in 1984 under mayor Rudy Giuliani following a decision by then-mayor Don Reiser to spend less on public services due to budget constraints. However many former municipals employees remain employed there today including some who manage large parks like Yosemite National Park or run street cleaning operations.
