The Union City Army C-130 Hercules transport plane was the primary transportation for American troops during World War II. The plane was used to bring soldiers and supplies to battlefields all over the world. The C-130 was designed by Boeing in 1941, and first flew in 1942. It became an important tool of American warfare during World War II, being used in many battles including Normandy, Italy, and Okinawa. In 1945, the C-130 was donated to the United States Air Force by Boeing. The USAF has kept the plane active ever since, flying it into retirement in 1976. The Union City Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1892. The department served the community until 1957. In that year, the department became a part of the California National Guard. The unit was redesignated as the 101st Airborne Division in 1984 and remained with that branch until 1992 when it reverted to its original name of the Union City Volunteer Fire Department.
Union City is a city in San Francisco County, California. The population was 71,011 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city by population in San Francisco and the second-largest city in Northern California after Berkeley. In 2016, Forbes estimated that Union City had a GDP of $126 billion. The early history of Union City can be traced back to 1849 when American Civil War veteran James Hutton purchased land east of Sacramento on which to build what would become known as Hutton's Mill (now part of UC Davis). By 1861, Union City had emerged as a major center for agricultural production in Northern California due to its location at the foot of Mount Shasta and its access to water resources. In 1872, Southern Pacific Railroad architect George Gilbert Scott designed and built the first railroad station in town – now known as Union Station – on Main Street.Scott's design features an asymmetrical facade with vaults above ground level and an open-air basement beneath. This style would later become popular among Central Coast railroads such as SP and CA&I. During World War II, Union City played host to several important military installations including Fort Point Naval Shipyard on Alcatraz Island; Camp Pendleton on Crescent Beach; and ammunition manufacturing plants at Maytag & Sons Manufacturing Company (later GE) and Wilmington Arsenal Corporation (WAC). The post-war years were difficult for Union City due to economic recession but it recovered slowly through development of new industries such as healthcare services, high tech companies, professional sports teams,[and] education institutions such as Woodrow Wilson High School[.] On January 1st 2020,[1][2] Union City became one of 22 cities worldwide[3][4] adopted into the State of Missouri under Governor Jay Nixon’s “Welcome Home” program.[5] On July 9th 2020,[6][7][8][9] Mayor Darrell Steinberg announced that he would not seek re-election next year.[10] On October 2nd 2020,[11][12][13] Mayor Darrell Steinberg announced his candidacy for Governor of California.[14],[15][/16][/17][/18][/19][/20],[21],[22], becoming only the third mayor in history to run for statewide office without having been elected city councilmember or mayoralty before[23],[24]. After being defeated by Kamala Harris during her November 2018 election campaign,[25], he returned to his mayoral seat but announced his candidacy again for governor in March 2019[26]. A win over incumbent Gavin Newsom would give him full term as mayor while also putting him within reach if he ran for governor again in 2022 or 2024; however no announcement has been made since then indicating whether he will run again or stay out of politics altogether.

Union City was founded on April 20, 1847 by James W. Marshall and his brothers George and Elijah. The town was named for the union of the two settlements of Unionville and Centralia, which had occurred a year earlier. The first post office in Union City was established on October 12, 1847. The town itself wasn’t incorporated until February 25, 1854. It quickly became a populous place with over 1,500 residents in 1850. By 1860, Union City had become one of the leading towns in California due to its strategic location at the junction of three major railroads - the Southern Pacific Railway (SP), Northern Pacific Railway (NRA), and Union Pacific Railroad (UP). Due to its importance as a transportation hub, Union City experienced significant growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1907, it became the first city in California to have streetlights installed. Additionally, it hosted an exposition called “World’s Columbian Exposition” from 1915-1917 which attracted over 100 million visitors overall. During World War II, Union City played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center due to its location near several military installations around the state ofCalifornia. As a result, many large businesses were located within its boundaries – such as McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and Westinghouse Electric Company – which helped contribute to its rapid development during that time period.
