Union City, California is home to one of the oldest and most well-known roasting companies in the world. The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1868. Union City has been a cornerstone of the coffee industry for over 100 years and continues to contribute a significant amount of quality beans each year to national and international retailers. Today, Union City Coffee Roasters is one of the largest roasting companies in the country with operations in California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas. They roast more than 1 million pounds of coffee each month and distribute their products throughout North America. In addition to their award-winning coffees, Union City Coffee Roasters also sells danish pastries, baked goods and espresso drinks. The history of Union City Coffee Roasters can be traced back to 1868 when John Ladd started selling coffee beans from his family’s small farm located in central Fremont County. This early vigilantism was necessary as there were no coopers or processors available at this time which made it difficult for farmers to sell their product nationally. It was not until 1915 when an Italian immigrant named Antonio Vacca began importing coffee beans into California from Italy which helped increase demand for these high quality beans among local cafes and restaurants. From then on Union City became an important player in the coffee industry with its own roastery, bakery and espresso bar all within walking distance of each other on Market Street downtown. In 1951, Don Slater purchased Union City Coffee Roasters from Antonio Vacca who had continued working here after leaving Italy due to World War II restrictions on exporting coffeebeans by Italians living outside Of Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship (1938-1945). At that time Don Slater was considered one of America’s leading entrepreneurs having founded numerous successful businesses such as Avis Rent A Car, Coca ColaCola and Pizza Hut (now Papa John’s Pizza). He knew how essential it was for his company to remain open during times like these when so many others had closed their doors because they could not compete with imported foreign bean prices or production costs mandated by Mussolini’s dictatorship – making it very difficult for American farmers who were still able to sell their crops despite government prohibitions against exportation under any circumstances whatsoever. The first espresso machine was built in 1875 by Angelo Brescia. It was used to make cappuccinos from small amounts of water and milk that were heated until it turned into foam. Coffee was first bottled in 1876 by Giovanni Battista Carafa. The first cafeterias started serving espresso in 1912 with Luigi Ligabue's La Caffètta delle Vigne on Via Parigi being one of the first places to do so. In 1937, Italian businessman Nello Saitta founded La Caffètta Nuova (New Cafeteria) in central Rome as part of his efforts to improve public transportation options within Rome during World War II. La Caffètta Nuova became one of the earliest successful café chains in Italy when it opened its doors to customers on November 15th, 1938
