In 1851, the California Custom House was built in Union City and became the focal point for city merchants. The custom house served as a center for trade and commerce until 1903 when it was destroyed by fire. In its place stood the new San Francisco County courthouse, which would serve as the centerpiece of Union City's government for many years. The California National Guard first arrived in Union City on December 14, 1861. At that time, there were only two companies of soldiers in Valley County and they were quartered at Stockton. On January 4, 1862, a company of soldiers from Reno arrived in Union City and soon thereafter another company from Sacramento joined them. On July 5, 1862, a battalion of troops under command of Colonel John C. Fremont arrived in Union City with orders to build Fort Point on Telegraph Hill overlooking the city. However, due to political instability at home and difficulties getting troops to Oregon Territory where he intended to stationed them, Fremont abandoned his plans for Fort Point and instead located his battalion at Camp Floyd nearpresent-day San Rafael Boulevard in San Francisco Bay Area outside of town limits while he awaited reinforcements. On October 3, 1862 Colonel William Toler established military Presidencies along the edge of present-day San Francisco Bay Area between Marin County on one side and Contra Costa County on the other; these presidencies were also known as Signal Corps Districts because their primary purpose was providing communication between military units operating out of various points along the coast defense line east of Sausalito or north shoreline around Tiburon Peninsula (between Marin Headlands - Just south off Highway 1 - west shoreline). 2nd Battalion California Infantry Regiment rendezvoused with 10th Cavalry Regiment at Rancho Seco about 12 miles northeast corner of Tiburon Peninsula on April 6 1863 after being mustered out from volunteers at Stockton previous fall Provisional Officers: Lieutenant Colonel George Wickersham commanding 2nd Battalion California Infantry Regiment Major General James Halleck commanding 10th Cavalry Regiment 1st Lieutenant Edward Sibley commanding 9th Calvary regiment First Sergeant Augustus Atherton Third Sergeant Lorenzo Booth Second Sergeant George Fenton NCO’s: Corporal Charles Lomas First Corporal Franklin Emmons Second Corporal Hiram Jennings Third Corporal Alfred Pemberton Quartermaster Sergeant Thomas Mowbray Carpenter Artist named "JONES" who later died

The Union City National Guard was organized on November 25, 1881. It is the oldest statewide military organization in California. The Guard has been mobilized for over 120 years and currently serves as a reserve component of the California National guard.
Union City, California is an incorporated city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 54,652 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in San Bernardino County and the third most populous municipality of any size in Riverside County. Union City is bordered by Compton to the east, Newport Beach to the west and Diamond Bar to the south. The first inhabitants of what is now Union City were Native Americans who lived near Antelope Wells Creek before moving upstream into present-day San Bernardino County. The Mission Santa Ana de la Purísima Concepcion founded in 1769 served as a religious center for Mexican settlers who had arrived since 1821 when Mexico ceded control of Alta California to United States. After American independence was granted on November 8, 1847, General Crockett's division of troops under Colonel John Brougham attacked Mexican forces southwest of Yuma River where they temporarily abandoned their supplies and concentration camps while they rebuilt their forces northward along Adobe Road which later became known as Main Street. The town was platted on February 10, 1848 by Hiram Sutter with land taken from Rancho Niguel within modern-day Diamond Bar boundaries. A post office called Union City was established at its intersection with Adobe Road on July 29, 1850; it was discontinued due to its distance from other settlements and soon became a stagecoach stop on routes between Los Angeles and San Bernardino Valley towns such as Claremont (now Pomona) and Indio (now Riverside). In 1861 Union City annexed part of El Sobrante northeast of downtown including parts of today's Monrovia neighborhood; this annexation resulted from a suit brought against El Sobrante by residents angered over taxes levied there without their consent during early years of the Gold Rush period. Today, the National Guard is an important part of American society and provides essential services such as search and rescue, disaster relief, and homeland security. The history of the National Guard can be traced back to early colonial times when militias were used as a self-defense force against Indian attacks. In 1792, New York state established its own militia with the goal of providing protection for settlers on Long Island. The Militia Act was amended in 1802 to create the New York State Army Corps of Cadets which served as model for later national guard units. 1) The 1st Regiment (New York) Infantry was organized on October 15th, 1792 at Albany under command of Colonel John Sloat; it consisted of 40 men from Livingston County; 10 men from Nassau County; 6 men from Suffolk County; 2 linesmen from Westchester County (one lineman being Captains George Washington and James Clinton); 1 sergeantmajor; 5 corporals; 50 privates (later promoted to sergeant major). 2) On February 10th, 1793 colonel John Sloat ordered that all troops must disband after they had failed to stop an attack by three French ships on Long Island that resulted in one dead crewmember and several injuries sustained by other crewmembers including Private William Floyd who lost his right leg below knee 3) On July 12th1793 Colonel John Sloat ordered that all troops must camp outside Fort Orange until he received orders authorizing them to march into town under cover of darkness where they would rendezvous with their regimental commanders at General James Wade's headquarters located on Liberty Street opposite Trinity Presbyterian Church . 4) August 25th1793 Captain Francis Ledyard reported that there were only 36 enrolled militiamen out of a regiment strength which should have brought about 800 soldiers but due to illness among some officers no muster took place even though Lt Col John Tryon had been authorized by congress for 350 militiamen not 100 officer enlistedmen whom Tryon estimated at 20% capacity so captain Ledyard called upon Major Amos Kendall 8 companies strong from Ulster county 400 mounted ] led by Col Peter Stuyvesant] .5) Thereafter Every man went his own way taking arms & ammunition where he could find them without threat or molestation
