Upland is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California and is bordered by Nevada to the east, Oregon to the north, and Alameda County to the west. The population was 831 as of 2010. The valley began forming about 12 million years ago when the earth's crust split along a fault line. The area that now includes Upland was originally part of the greater Madera Area which included parts of what are today Fresno, Stockton, Merced and Modesto Counties. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were Spanish explorers in 1769-1770 who named it Rancho de las Pulgas (Pumpkin Ranch). In 1821 Mexico acquired California from Spain and designated it as part of their new nation. However, until 1848 Mexico never allowed any English people or settlers into California other than those who had been whitegradediles (owners or employees of Mexican land). This policy changed when General Antonio López de Santa Anna became president of Mexico on February 2, 1848. He ordered all existing Anglo holders of land within Mexican territory be given an opportunity to purchase it at public auction so that Mexicans could purchase more land for themselves. From this point on Anglo Californians were permitted limited access to only a few hundred acres per year while Mexicans were allowed unlimited access for development purposes. This policy continued until 1850 when a group led by John Cranch started paddling upriver from San Francisco Bay towards present day Salinas where they founded Mission San José de Buena Vista on December 6th,. After several days they discovered there was no water available so they set up camp near modern-day Tuolumne Meadows before continuing their journey upstream another day culminating in their founding of Alta Mesa on January 3rd,. As development increased around these sites interactions between local Native Americans and early European colonists began occur

Upland, California is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. Upland is located on the Kern River and is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Upland was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1769. He named it San Miguel de Atacama after Santiago Atacama, Chile's first capital city. The present day town name honors General John Custer who fought in the American Civil War against Mexico and lost his life in battle at Adobe Walls on November 16, 1867. In 1868 Wm Hite platted what became known as Upland and built a sawmill on the riverbank east ofpresent-day downtown Upland. A post office called Atascosa was established in 1875; it closedodaquilieriertitle (Atascosa) residents Chico Lomas and José Gomez took over operation ofthe post office in 1909 when they moved from their original home north of town to open a store thereon the south side of Kern River opposite modern day downtown Upland. In 1916 David Stone opened Stone’s Drug Store which remain prominent today along with other businesses that have graced this once sleepy corner ofBakersfield since its early days including Kroger supermarkets., Safeway creek view agricultural land stretching east from present day downtown to Mineral Wells Canyon was patented by George Hearn On July 12th 1870 US Patent 827 998 for Rancho El Cucamonga or “Upper Valley” grazing lands grantee George Hearn according toWill Rogers Wild West Showbusiness Journal article dated October 6th 1912 It should be noted that while historic maps place Rancho El Cucamonga within present day Downtown Bakersfield boundaries as well as various oral histories dating back to at least 1915 reveal that much later some portions or even all of RanchoElCucamonga were annexed into more recent locations like Midtown Bakersfield however for purposes herein I am focusing only upon what is presently known simply as UPLAND
Upland is located in the central valley of California. It was first settled by Native Americans and later became part of Mexico. The United States acquired it as a result of the Mexican-American War in 1848. In 1853, the U.S. built an airfield on the site and named it Camp Cooke after General George Cooke, who had led American forces in that war. The area around Camp Cooke became known as Upland because of its high elevation and lack of vegetation.
