The town was named after an upland region within California's Central Valley that straddles the state line between Nevada and Oregon. The name means "hill country" or "plateau." Upland is a census-designated place in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. Upland is located on the Russian River between Sausalito and Tiburon. The first Europeans to visit what is now Upland were Spanish Franciscan missionaries in 1795. A rancho was granted by Juan Bautista de Anza to Francisco Atanasoff in 1825. Atanasoff named it Rancho San Rafael because his father had been given that land by St. Rafael of Yuma as part of a grant from Mexico City for his journey up the Sacramento Valley in 1824-25 or 1830-31. After Atanasoff's death in 1847, portions of Rancho San Rafael passed hands among various owners until they were acquired by Captain George Fife (1810-81) of the Navy during World War II. Captain Fife built a small mill here on Mill Creek starting in 1850 which he operated until 1861 when he sold it to Jens Jensen who named it "Jensen's Mills", later shortened to Upland Brewing Company Ltd., and then finally Jensen Brewery Ltd.. In 1903, Captian Wolkowitz purchased the brewery and renamed it Pacific Breweries Incorporated; this company became known as SABMiller Corporation after merging with Miller Brewing Company (now Budweiser) in 2001. "Upland" was first used as an English spelling for an Indian word meaning 'to uplift'. It has been spelled "Upperland", " Upper Peninsula", etc.; there have even been twoMaps showing different spellings - one published under US Army rule while another was produced by mapmakers for local use only! The current spelling seems more appropriate since most people hereabouts identify themselves simply as "Uppersiders". The name comes from an old adage that if you want your family to be proud of you, start with raised shoulders! The town site was chosen because its location – on both sides of Mill Creek – made it easy for early settlers to get goods into town and out again without having to go far off the road or down perilsome mountain trails... By 1870, when incorporation started being offered through newspaper ads, much attention had already been given to what would become Upland proper; however much growth took place elsewhere withinMARIN COUNTY which would be described further on....In 1911 5 stores &15 businesses served UPLAND with mail service."
